School of Engineering Location: Bailrigg
Salary: £31,396 to £36,024 (Full time, indefinite until 31 March 2026)
Closing Date: Sunday 03 March 2024
Interview Date: Wednesday 13 March 2024
Reference: 0089-24
Applications are invited for a Chemical Engineering research associate to take a key role in the development of a novel, microwave plasma, gasification and processing facility.
An acknowledged route to processing organics including those with high toxicity, and generating syngas for energy recovery, is using atmospheric pressure plasmas. Plasmas are particularly suitable for processing vapours and gases. Large-volume plasmas, which is a benefit of the proposed technology, can also process fine particulates and droplets. The investigation of DC, AC and Microwave plasmas have been extensively researched for waste and thermal processing. This project will build on existing knowledge by pursuing an electrodeless MW plasma that is more efficient, has minimal component degradation with time and is easier to scale up than other MW plasmas. The project is being funded through the STFC Early-Stage Research and Development Scheme APP7279. The plasma uses a bespoke Microwave mode converter whose design was inspired by STFC accelerator science.
The PDRA will work under the supervision of the Head of Chemical Engineering, and Senior Microwave Engineer from the Cockcroft Institute.
Ideally, applicants should have a PhD in Chemical Engineering and experience in high-temperature gas phase processing.
You will join us on an indefinite contract however, the role remains contingent on external funding which, at this time is for 24 months.
