Shepherd and Wedderburn are currently recruiting for a newly or recently qualified Solicitor working across the Private Client and Corporate Tax team based at our office in Edinburgh. Our expanding cross-border and international Private Wealth team is highly regarded in the market for providing bespoke technical advice across a range of complex areas including tax and succession planning, Will and Trust drafting and administration, generational structuring, international and contentious probate, executory administration and stewardship for incapable adults. Our Corporate Tax team is also highly regarded and its work includes providing tax support for corporate finance transactions (for example, drafting and negotiating tax warranties and tax covenants and advising on stamp duty) and real estate transactions (for example, advising on VAT, capital allowances, land and buildings transaction tax and stamp duty land tax).

By working across these teams this role provides a rare opportunity to develop a broad understanding of UK tax law as well as an developing expertise in specialised areas of private client advice including its impact on clients with varied commercial interests.

We act for a wide range of clients, and operate closely with colleagues in our family and rural business groups and our corporate finance and real estate teams. Our focus is on quality and responsiveness to our clients’ needs and we are seeking a technically strong individual with the drive to succeed in a challenging, varied and busy environment.

We recognise the benefits of active and targeted training and appropriate support shall be provided to develop the successful individual’s skills to meet the demands of an intellectually challenging and rewarding position. Prior experience of Corporate Tax is not necessary as full training will be provided but some experience in either corporate or real estate transactions would be an advantage. We are a STEP Platinum employer and have supported various members of staff in seeking specialist tax qualifications. 

The role

Technical/Legal Skills

• To demonstrate appropriate range of legal knowledge.

• To generate and implement new ideas in specialist area.

Business/Work Management

• To ensure personal WIP effectively administered and consult on billing.

• To accurately administer time sheets.

• To implement improvements in working methods.

• To prepare well for meetings.

• To demonstrate effective time management.

Business Development

• To develop an understanding of the impact of external market forces on clients identifying trends, which may lead to business development opportunities.

• To develop effective ways of delivering client solutions with minimum guidance.

• To know main players at each client and build relationships.

• To demonstrate awareness of client care issues.

• To communicate feedback to partner/associate.

• To understand value of activity versus time spent.

• To participate in marketing activities.

• To assist in the development of credible marketing plans.

• To demonstrate effective presentational and writing skills.

• To implement cross selling opportunities.

• To use knowledge as a marketing tool (e.g. eBulletin articles, client seminars, etc.).

People Management

• To develop an effective personal presence with partners and colleagues.

• To delegate work effectively to both fee earning and non-fee earning staff - including objective setting and feedback.

• To demonstrate an ability to supervise work effectively.

• To demonstrate an understanding of expectations and objectives for team on transactions.

• To give well prepared and presented training sessions.

• To interact positively with colleagues in other sections.

• To develop leadership skills on client work and management.
