Job description

A Vacancy at Barking Havering and Redbridge Univ Hospitals NHS Trust.

As an Anaesthetist at Barking Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust you will be joining a busy and dynamic team of over 170 medics who cover a multitude of specialties allowing the successful candidate to explore many opportunities the role will be able to offer you.

There are twenty-five theatres – 16 at Queen’s (including 2 interventional radiology theatres) and 9 at King George hospitals. There are also two further obstetric theatres on the Queen’s site. All theatre sessions are overseen by a dedicated Duty Day Consultant and Theatre Coordinator (who is not allocated to a theatre and is able to assist any theatre in an emergency). The Trust currently performs up to 28,000 operations per year which include adults and children, emergency and elective, day cases as well as inpatient cases.

There are 52 critical care beds. Eight at KGH with the rest at Queen’s, including 12 neuroscience beds at Queen’s. The General ITU has a mix of both medical and surgical patients and is overseen by 20 Consultant Intensivists and 207 critical care nurses. Outreach services are consultant run seven days a week.

The Neurosciences department based at Queen’s Hospital is a tertiary referral centre catering to Essex and Northeast London and the Trust is also a tertiary centre for vascular and cancer and have a high throughput of elective cancer surgery patients e.g., post upper GI surgery.

Consultant in Anaesthesia with a Special Interest in Paediatric Anaesthesia

Provide a high quality, responsive Anaesthesia for elective procedures for paediatric patients two years and older and will include Maxillofacial, ENT, Orthopaedics, Urology and General Surgery Specialities at Barking Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust that assume responsibility for the patients within the catchment area in co-operation with consultant colleagues in Anaesthetics and other clinical departments.

This will include provision for paediatric and general anaesthesia.

Develop a team with a strong emphasis on delivering a cross-site service.

Post-holders will be required to work on each site

We provide care for the residents of three diverse London boroughs. Most of our 7,800 permanent staff live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals and we operate from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London – more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Community Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic.

We’re pleased to be leading the way inreducing the time our patientswait to get the treatment they need. The Elective Surgical Hub at King George Hospital is one of eight to beaccredited as part of a national scheme; the Care Quality Commission has raised the ratings for urgent and emergency care at Queen’s and King George hospitals; and data released by NHS England showed that the Trust was the most improved in 2023 for reducing waits for emergency care.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We’re also part of theNorth East London Cancer Alliance.

The Trust seeks to appoint a Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in Paediatric anaesthesia.

This is a whole-time position, and the new appointee will share the caseload, facilities, and trainee grade support with the existing consultants.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide paediatric and general anaesthesia.

He/she will be expected to introduce and apply new techniques as appropriate and to take a share of the general work of the department, including cover for consultant colleagues where practical.
