Job description
Guildford High School is an exceptional place of possibility. Nestled in the heart of Guildford, a town brimming with historical charm and architectural splendour, it is a place where a love of learning is fostered, curiosity thrives, and creativity is unleashed. We consistently achieve some of the best public examination results in the country. Our 2023 results placed us second in the Sunday Times Parent Power league table. The school was recently named The Sunday Times Independent School of the Year 2024 and has also claimed titles such as The Sunday Times Southeast Independent Secondary School of the Decade, and Independent Preparatory School of the Decade in recent years.
GHS is a through-school with many of our pupils joining at aged four in Reception, with others joining in Year 7, and continuing their education right through to the end of the Upper Sixth. A fantastic mix of wonderful pupils, supportive parents and outstanding staff lead to exceptional outcomes for all our pupils. The girls are delightful; it is cool to learn in our school and teaching here is a real joy.
GHS pupils embrace challenges both in and out of the classroom. The breadth and depth of their achievements is seen not only in academic results, but through the multitude of other interests which they pursue to the highest level.
Our staff are integral in delivering to our pupils an education of the highest quality; one that inspires them to think and learn creatively. We seek to recruit and retain dynamic teaching and non-teaching staff who share in our vision and commitment.

History Department
We are looking for someone to teach History in Years 7, 8 and 9 and to play a part in the teaching of GCSE and A Level. The amount of A Level teaching and which part of the course will be taught will be dependent on the experience and academic background of the candidate.
The successful candidate will be asked to play a full role in the wider life of the department. Once happily settled into GHS, the candidate will be invited to help with the extra-curricular activities and the general administration of the History curriculum. The History Department at GHS is strong and thriving with six members of staff currently teaching the subject.
In Years 7, 8 and 9, we have devised our own curriculum, taking into account the particular interests and needs of the students at GHS.
In Year 7 we focus on the Norman Conquest, Medieval England and the Mughal Empire.
In Year 8 we study the causes and events of the British Civil Wars. This is followed by a topic on the British Empire and Industrial Revolution. The year ends with a focus on voting rights.
In Year 9 we begin with studying Racism and the Struggle for Civil Rights in twentieth century America. This is then followed by an investigation into the causes and events of the First World War. The KS3 curriculum ends with a unit on the Holocaust.
At GCSE, the subject is a popular option choice, with four groups in each of Years 10 and 11. We follow the Edexcel IGCSE course, covering units on Germany 1918-1945, Superpower Relations 1945-1972, Russia 1905-1924 and China 1900-1989.
At A Level we follow the OCR course. In the Lower Sixth, students split their time between studying the Tudors, 1485-1558, and Italy, 1900-1943. In the Upper Sixth, students study Civil Rights in the USA, 1865-1992. Alongside this, they complete their coursework, for which students are given a choice of topics, including the Tudors and twentieth century Russian and Soviet history.
All these courses are supported by a wide range of resources. We also run a number of visits to places of related interest ranging from the Somme Battlefields to Berlin.
This is not intended to be exhaustive and the post holder may perform other duties reasonably required by the Head.
* The School reserves the right to make an appointment at any stage during the recruitment process.
