Job description

Eden Scott is delighted to be retained by Buck & Birch to appoint an experienced Commercial Manager to scale-up the business both nationally and internationally.

Buck & Birch (B&B) was formed in 2015 by friends Tom Chisholm and Rupert Waites. This their first venture was inspired by a shared love of the outdoors and of the wealth of foraged foods available in the Scottish landscape. Rupert, a chef, is an expert on Scottish plant life while Tom is a talented designer and an outstanding brand ambassador for B&B's drink and food products. In May 2022 a second round of funding, following the initial 'friends and family' start-up round, introduced a new investor and Chairman, George Mackintosh, a noted entrepreneur. The board consists of the founders, the chairman, an experienced CA as the virtual FD, an overseas-based corporate senior manager and a seasoned senior executive in the international drinks business.

Performance


Beginning in 2015 the founders evolved their fine dining operation into a spirit and liqueur producer with complimentary catering activities. Momentum was hit by the Covid epidemic but has recovered during 2023. Revenues are below 1 million pounds sterling. The first contract with a major retailer is taking shape and is expected to drive growth from Q2 2024. The board is confident that the products fit the marketplace in terms of taste and sustainability and that each product has a special consumer appeal and a distinct difference to other drinks market niches. The innovation of the founders is presumed to be recognised in considerable enterprise value growth over the next five years.

Products


The range of drinks is unique in the market as the formulas and ethos of the company are based on using natural foraged ingredients sourced from environmentally sustainable sources, primarily on the land and in the seas of Scotland. Birch, ANA, Amarosa, Rum&Cake and Aelder are supplemented by seasonally available pre-mixed cocktails.
Food and events will be re-focused to support and complement the sale of the drinks products in a new 'brand home' opening in 2024.

The role


The board of B&B wishes to recruit a Commercial Manager who will be responsible for the scale-up of the company by sales to large distributors (nationally and internationally) and to the major grocery multiples in the UK. Reporting to the CEO Tom Chisholm, the candidate will also attend board meetings and is expected to take a seat at the board in due course. The candidate will have a remuneration package deserving of his/her experience with revenue achievement incentives. It is also expected that the candidate will be offered an equity incentive plan.

The board wishes to find a self-starting individual, with a corporate sales background but who has a strong entrepreneurial leaning. The individual must be capable of winning new business and being able to manage the detail of on-boarding and account managing large customers. Intelligent, prepared to work at a fast start-up pace, identifying with the company and being a team player, the candidate is likely to be a graduate and to have worked for a known brand.

Experience Required:

In summary of the above, the role will be secured by someone with corporate experience, who's a deal closer, someone capable of managing contract detail and someone who can play in a team and is driven by an entrepreneurial instinct.
