The new Research Tech Data and Predictive Sciences function is focussed on harnessing the power of GSK’s data-as-an-asset to drive research productivity upper quartile ambitions.
As the Senior Director of the Cheminformatics (CIX) group, you will be focused on leading a team that develops, integrates and embeds advanced computational methods and predictive in silico models that accelerate the discovery of medicines.
Data & Predictive Sciences will only be successful by working in close collaboration with Research Tech, TAs, GSK Tech, AIML, Vaccines, Risk & Compliance, and across lines within the function itself, and by developing and fostering a high-performing team culture of collaboration, curiosity, consistency, agility, quality, peer review, and continuous improvement with a relentless focus on enabling value realization through end-user uptake and measuring impact.
Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities:
Leadership of a global team of Ph.D. level Cheminformaticians with a wide diversity of skillsets that include cheminformatics, statistics, machine learning and molecular design.
Align the portfolio of scientific and program-support activities to proactively seek out opportunities for impact of computational molecular design methodologies on drug discovery at GSK.
Accountable for the identification, validation and integration of emergent trends and opportunities in computational science that impact drug discovery by accelerating the pipeline through increased efficacy and reduced cycle times.
With MMD & Discovery Chemistry, embed and scale BRADSHAW and related methods into small molecule design standard practice. Continually improve BRADSHAW capabilities and enhance our ligand-based design approaches. Realize our aspirations for Digital Chemistry
Ensure methods are applicable to our growing modality toolbox including covalents, PROTACS and ADCs and determine the potential for application to oligos.
Determine and embed optimal array design methodologies, hit selection and expansion methods.
Investigate the applicability of high throughput PBPK or other models in the early discovery space to enable our ability to design molecules that can achieve the desired dose levels.
Deliver global models for ADMET & safety endpoints in collaboration with Pre-Clinical Sciences
Partner with Tech organizations to facilitate the move to cloud, incorporate Google Big Query where possible.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to lead a team of PhD level scientists
PhD in Computational Chemistry or Life Sciences or equivalent with 15+ years pharma or biotech experience and a track record of impactful contributions.
Evidence of broad expertise in the computational sciences with an emphasis on structure & ligand-based molecular design, cheminformatics and machine learning
Demonstrable technical excellence in elements of predictive modeling (AI/ML), such as: QSAR, active learning, molecular generation, etc.
Demonstrated track record of identifying, developing, and applying innovative solutions to scientific and technological problems faced in computational molecular design and in the wider drug discovery organization.
Demonstrates evidence of developing and implementing new scientific strategies in collaboration with other disciplines (Med Chem, Screening, DMPK, etc.).
Demonstrated track record in leading change.
Demonstrated ability to work as team leader and participate and lead in a matrix environment.
Evidence of influencing organisational scientific strategy
Evidence of strong critical thinking skills.
Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with scientists in other disciplines with a positive, collegial, collaborative attitude.
Extensive knowledge of related disciplines (e.g. chemistry, biology, DMPK, safety) to enable multidisciplinary approaches to be identified and integrated into a cohesive project plan
Evidence of identifying, developing, and applying innovative solutions to scientific and technological problems faced in the Life Sciences
Evidence of strong problem-solving & high learning agility
Evidence of a broad knowledge of computational sciences which will include a deep knowledge of machine learning and cheminformatics and related methods such as QSAR, active learning, molecular generation, etc.
Extensive knowledge of related disciplines (medicinal chemistry, HT screening, analytical chemistry, DMPK, Tox, Imaging) to enable multidisciplinary approaches to be identified and integrated into a cohesive project plan.
