Job description
What you will do in your working day
Daily Duties:
- Awareness of health and safety on site and develop your awareness of the use of Personal Protective Equipment & adhering to site rules and control measures in place.
- Clean the work area and ensure that any debris or hazardous material is cleared away.
- Understand different techniques and methods used to move, handle and store materials.
- Create various types of mortar mixes using silos or mixing tools depending on the site requirements.
- Ensure that bricks are laid symmetrically and that cement is appropriately applied to bond them together.
- Develop a range of trowel techniques to spread beds and perp bricks, minimising waste and increasing site cleanliness and good standards of work presentation skills.
- Shape and trim bricks to ensure they form bonding as required to maintain optimum strength within wall construction.
- Trained and guided to use a variety of power and hand tools such as disc cutters, trowels, lump hammers, bolsters etc.
- Determine if bricks need to be laid vertically or horizontally with instruction from a supervisor, or site manager and referencing against the site’s specification for applicable plots.
- Study plans for the building before starting on a bricklaying project ensuring you adhere to the requirements of the specific works you’re tasked to complete.
- Use pointing tools to apply finishing touches.
The training you will be getting
All of our apprentices will work alongside qualified and experienced bricklayers to learn the trade and assist in all aspects of bricklaying on a busy construction site. In addition to learning the skills required to become a competent bricklayer, apprentices will also obtain the knowledge and behaviour to support them in the construction sector.
- One day a week, attending Weston College.
- Bricklayer Apprenticeship Level 2 qualification.
- End Point Assessment.
CSCS card must be obtained prior to start – This will be available through a construction Traineeship program with Weston College where applicable.
Previous bricklaying qualifications an advantage but not required as full training and guidance from both Persimmon and Weston college will be provided.
What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship
- The successful applicant will work with other apprentices in our region with a view to forming their own bricklaying gang.
