Serco Rail Technical Services (SRTS) is a leader in the provision of rail technical expertise working with organisations in the rail sector nationally and internationally. SRTS clients include government, rail infrastructure management companies, rolling stock companies, train operators and equipment manufacturers. SRTS has more than 50 years of experience across the rail system, now specialising in project management, consultancy, technical training, digital and engineering services. SRTS is part of Serco’s Transport & Community Services business within the UK & Europe Division.

Rail Technical Services is a business Serco is investing in and we are currently looking for a strong leader to drive its growth and to manage the delivery of contractual commitments to its existing customers. This is an opportunity for an experienced individual to identify and maximise growth opportunities for the development and expansion of Serco Rail Technical Services, effectively contributing to the objectives and strategy of our Transport & Community Services business unit.

We are looking for an individual with both strong people leadership and commercial skills.

Main accountabilities:

- To lead and develop the SRTS business and provide leadership so that all employees understand and adopt the strategy and plans and are motivated to fulfil their potential.
- Ensure all contracted services are delivered in line with agreed contracts, with the requirements of all stakeholders, external and internal, being met.
- Grow the revenue and profitability of SRTS, through delivering existing contract, securing new business in existing and new markets, and ensuring SRTS operates efficiently.
- Ensure Serco policies, governance and principles are adhered to by all colleagues.
- Direct the management of major items of project work, ensure contractual obligations are met and customer satisfaction is achieved.
- Forecast and co-ordinate resources and ensure that workload is monitored and controlled within the agreed costs and timescales and, where necessary, by adjustment of priorities and/or redeployment of staff.
- Implement British and International Safety Standards to ensure that UK and European legal requirements are adhered to, and a safe operational railway system is maintained.
- Ensure technical competence/performance of all sub-contractors to maintain professional and technical standards.

Safety responsibilities:

- Implement and maintain arrangements to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of employees, customers and all other parties affected by the activities of SRTS.
- Ensure that standards of safety, including systems of work, conditions, behaviour, and performance, particularly in respect to the hazardous areas of on-track testing and workshop/depot activities, are defined and effectively implemented to comply with legislation and company policy.
- Responsible for the operation and upkeep of staff competency assessment regimes. Ensuring that contracted staff are competent to undertake the work required.
- Ensure the workplace, facilities, plant, and equipment are inspected and maintained in good working order.
- Ensure all accident/incidents are reported in line with Company policy. Assist in the investigation process, process, produce any reports required and follow up any outstanding action(s).
- Ensure all staff work in accordance with the requirements of the Rail Industry.

What you’ll need to do the role

- Excellent business management and people leadership skills within a commercial organisation
- Proven experience of delivering growth in a technical services business
- Experience of Safety Management and working to procedures and governance.
- Chartered engineer status and / or business management qualifications are desirable and not essential
