School of Computing and Communications
Location: Bailrigg
Salary: £38,205 to £44,263 (Full time, indefinite with end date contract)
Closing Date: Sunday 07 April 2024
Interview Date: See advert
Reference: 1073-23-R Interviews are Scheduled for 23rd and 24th April.

We are seeking to appoint a Senior Research Associate to work on TUDOR (Towards Ubiquitous 3D Open Resilient Network), an exciting new DSIT project that will address the key challenges involved in developing network components that enable seamless interoperability in heterogeneous networks of 5G and future technologies, including terrestrial, airborne (HAPS) and satellite networks. The TUDOR consortium brings together more than 20 partners, including world-leading researchers from UK universities, innovative equipment vendors, major network operators and network/software and system integrators from both space and terrestrial sectors. TUDOR aims to develop open network technologies that will underpin the next generation of mobile networks.

TUDOR is an ambitious research project aiming to address many societal, environmental and economic grand challenges. In pursuit of Net-Zero goals, this consortium is dedicated to delivering consistent performance across a wide range of requirements for both public and private networks, all while striving for maximum energy efficiency. Through leveraging Open RAN (Radio Access Network) platforms developed in the UK, TUDOR will develop intelligent network functions with AI-driven spectrum sharing mechanisms to support the smooth rollout of future mobile networks.

Lancaster will take a leading role in TUDOR to design and implement a novel intent-driven management framework for 3D open networks. This will build on emerging open network standards for network management and orchestration towards closed-control loop automation with converged control and monitoring for 5G and future network technologies. In parallel, to improve decision support for automation, a digital twin platform will be developed, to predict the behaviour of real-life RAN and Core infrastructures and support the fulfilment of network intents.

We are looking for a Senior Research Associate to join TUDOR and help contribute to solving these exciting challenges for 5G and future network infrastructures. The ideal candidate should have a background in computer networking; more details on the relevant research fields can be found in the Person Specification. Whilst existing knowledge in these areas is desirable, we seek to build a team with complementary strengths and therefore will also consider applications from general computer science researchers.

You will be expected to implement and test systems throughout the project and therefore proficient programming skills are essential. You will work with two project investigators who are strongly committed to mentoring, and you will be encouraged and supported in developing your profile and new research proposals.

You will join us on an indefinite contract. The role remains contingent on external funding which, for this position, ends 31 January 2025. If you have any informal enquiries, please contact Prof. Nicholas Race ( networkedsystems @ lancaster.ac.uk We are committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies on an individual basis, as well as the Athena SWAN Charter, which recognizes and celebrates good employment practice undertaken to address gender equality in higher education and research.
