Job description

Sunderland City Council spends more than £430m per annum on goods, works and services with third party suppliers.  The Council’s Corporate Procurement function manages the diverse work programme ensuring compliant, timely and effective delivery of procurement activity valued £10k and over in conjunction with service areas.   

The Corporate Procurement team is seeking a dynamic and experienced professional to join our team as the Senior Category Manager that will contribute to the strategic direction and success of our procurement function. If you are a proactive and results-driven individual with a strong background in procurement, we invite you to apply for this exciting opportunity which provides a supportive and professional service to all service areas and council owned companies, to assist them with the delivery of their key priorities and statutory responsibilities.

Reporting into the Senior Procurement Manager, the postholder will have a major role to play in the delivery of the Councils extensive procurement workplan line managing the category managers and officers and will play a pivotal role in supporting the Senior Manager Procurement in driving the strategic direction, performance and associated policy objectives as set out in the Procurement Strategy.

A key priority will be to develop and implement innovative approaches to supply arrangements that minimise costs and commercial risk whilst at the same time enhancing the services the council provides to the citizens of Sunderland. The postholder will have an ability to understand markets and how they operate to ensure outcomes are maximised with full consideration of the local business economy within Sunderland.

The post holder must have strong management skills to ensure professional procurement is applied to contractual arrangements as well as excellent communication, IT, writing skills and have working knowledge and understanding of relevant procurement legislation and associated government objectives.
