The Opportunity

The Package Engineer will work within the multidisciplinary Dangerous Goods & Spent Fuel Services Team that delivers EDF Energy’s Dual Mission: the safe defueling of our nuclear reactors, and supporting continued operations at our generating sites.

Your role will be to manage the design, use, modification and technical requirements of a broad suite of radioactive material packages including spent fuel flasks. You will work with internal and external stakeholders at our fleet of nuclear power stations, our suppliers and regulators to provide through life management of these packages. This role has a direct bearing on safety and company performance, and you will provide oversight of fleet processes with respect to transport packages.

Pay, benefits and culture

We can offer a competitive salary from £54,391 - £71,779 and you’ll be appointed based on the parameters outlined in the Nuclear Generation Company Agreement as well as your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications.

What you’ll be doing

You will ensure that EDF Energy maintain a safe, compliant and efficient capability to move radioactive materials within the UK and abroad.

As a Package Engineer, you will be responsible for:

• Ensuring that Transport Packages have been suitably designed and certified for use in accordance with the relevant national and international regulations;
• Work with our supply chain partners on the design, manufacture, commissioning and licensing of radioactive material packages;
• The production and review of technical papers, including finite-element analysis, shielding calculations, and load restraint plans;
• Providing written guidance on the operation, maintenance and modification of Transport Packages, and act as a principal point of contact for end users;
• Ensuring adequate quality arrangements are in place at our stations and suppliers to ensure compliant package operation and maintenance;
• Maintaining suitable through-life records for Transport Packages in service;
• Mentoring station and supplier staff on radioactive material transport regulations.

Who you are

You will hold a minimum of a HNC qualification in a relevant subject. A degree level qualification would be advantageous. 

You must have experience working in a highly regulated industry and an awareness of the nuclear industry.

Skills and experience we’re looking for you to bring into this role include:

• Stakeholder management experience across multiple operational sites and suppliers, with the ability to influence and to create positive working relationships;
• The ability to react quickly to complex operational issues and give clear and timely advice to site staff;
• A clear, concise written and oral communication style;
• The ability to plan long term solutions and improvements whilst prioritising ongoing operations;
• A quick learning, problem solving mindset with a bias for action;
• Experience in managing suppliers and commercial contracts;
• Working knowledge of health, safety, and environmental legislation.

Knowledge and experience of EDF Energy AGR/PWR operations is desirable, as is familiarity with The Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations and the IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material. Previous experience in radioactive material transport in a technical, scientific or commercial role would be advantageous.
