What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales, change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun.This role sits within the Leadership Operations and Engineering Leadership teams. Akin to a strategic Chief of Staff, the Leadership Operations role is integral in supporting Canva’s Head of Engineering and broader Engineering Leadership team, to extend their reach and capacity to perform at their very best; providing focussed strategic direction on projects and creating spaces to proactively solve business challenges.

The Engineering organisation is a growing 2000+ global org at Canva and has scaled rapidly over the last few years. Working in Engineering means operating at scale and breadth, juggling a huge number of ever changing priorities and complexities. We move fast here at Canva, and this role will certainly keep you on your toes.

At it's core this role is an operational leader. We have the technical covered, and although an understanding of, or experience working with, engineers would be beneficial it's the ability to operationalise programs at scale, strategically advise and re-prioritise for leaders, and the confidence to make decisions with limited information, that will set you up for success. We are looking for someone who is highly efficient and organised, who loves nothing more than to anticipate needs before they arise and loves to get stuff done, knowing that means taking on the strategic and the BAU work as it comes in.

Please note, this role is a 12 month Fixed Term Contract.

By its very nature, the Leadership Ops role evolves as the business evolves. Anyone coming into this role should be prepared to work in an evolving environment, comfortable working with some level of ambiguity and be prepared to always be juggling multiple competing priorities:

• Strategic partner : You’ll be a key strategic operational partner to Brendan Humphreys, our Head of Engineering. This will mean being a trusted sounding board for decisions, consolidating requests and making recommendations or helping communicate to the wider business.
• Represent the Head of Engineering : Act as a representative on behalf of the Lead in meetings or projects, influencing key decisions and forming opinions that will be respected by senior executives.
• Leadership and coaching : You’ll coach a small but mighty operations team, who ensure that the Engineering organisation is running smoothly. Overseeing our core planning and reporting processes to ensure that Engineering stays on track to deliver initiatives while nurturing and supporting the growth of the team.
• Prioritisation : You’ll be the primary triage point and a gateway to our Head of Engineering. Canva moves fast and priorities are always changing, so you have to be across everything to make sure that the most urgent requests are being prioritised at the right point in time, being able to divide and conquer to ensure coverage in key work streams.
• Proactively drive projects forward and take on ad hoc programs : You’ll take on driving key projects and initiatives that are critical to Engineering Leadership and the Engineering organisation. This will include cross-cutting project management with stakeholders that sit in many different parts of Canva.
• Be a real people person : You’ll build strong, trusted relationships with key stakeholders within the company, this will be critical to ensuring that there is the right two-way visibility between the Engineering Leadership team and the business.
• Own the day to day : Working together with the Head of Engineering’s Admin Business Partner, you’ll make sure that their time is spent in the most impactful areas by triaging meeting requests and running meetings and engineering cadences effectively.
• Be in the detail : You have an innate desire to focus on the little things without losing sight of the bigger picture. Using data and insights to drive initiatives that have a measurable benefit to the Engineering organisation while maintaining a high quality bar.

You're probably a match if you’re great at prioritising, juggling projects (and moving them rapidly along), and keeping calm under pressure.

• You have 7 + years of experience in in strategy, planning, operations or business management, working with senior executives in fast-paced, high-performing, agile or technical environments.
• You have a bias for action, enjoy taking the initiative and approach the job with a great sense of urgency.
• You have experience prioritising and utilising tools to manage and track multiple projects simultaneously. With the added ability to work collaboratively or autonomously, while seamlessly shifting gears as needed with the ability to run processes at pace and scale.
• You’re truly self-motivated with a desire to constantly learn. A mature and strong-minded individual who leans into receiving feedback, and is eager to grow.
• You have the proven ability to compose clear, succinct and effective communications that drive clarity and impact across all levels of the organisation. You also have great visual communication and design skills (Canva’s made that bit easy!).
• You’re solutions focused with a strong drive to turn chaos rapidly to clarity. Constantly striving to get things done, you explore new methods to help move complex and critical initiatives forward, often navigating the new and unknown. You truly champion the value of Making Complex Things Simple.
• You’re a real people person - working with empathy, integrity, generosity and humility are at your core.
• You’re passionate about leadership, with experience managing teams; their delivery as well as growth and development.
• You have a keen eye for detail and a strong desire to uphold high standards of excellence.

About the team

You and your team of 4, will sit within the Operations Partnering group, which is dispersed throughout Canva, supporting our functions to deliver on their crazy big goals. The team is on a mission to build and optimise ways of working to empower Canvanauts around the world. Our Operations Business Partners support the operational cadences and delivery of Engineering programs and initiatives, while our Admin Business Partners focus on unlocking the capacity of Canva's Leaders by taking all administrative support.
