Salary Range

  • Hiring salary is anticipated at $6,000 - $6,293 per month commensurate with education, experience, and licensure.
  • CSU Salary Range: $4,394 - $7,950 per month

Position Summary: This position maintains and repairs a wide range of onboard electrical and electronic equipment, electrical installations and communication systems. Specific areas of responsibility include electrical maintenance, electrical installation, and electronic equipment systems maintenance and repair.

About California State University Maritime Academy

Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy, a campus of the California State University, is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located on the scenic Vallejo waterfront, the campus serves a student population of approximately 1000 undergraduates and 50 graduate students.

Cal Maritime offers seven baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, Global Studies and Maritime Affairs, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Transportation, and Oceanography. The undergraduate curriculum includes licensing programs for future merchant marine, Coast Guard, and naval reserve officers. Cal Maritime also offers a Master of Science in Transportation and Engineering Management degree, as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.

Major Responsibilities

  • Electrical, electronic, and automation equipment and electrical installations: Maintain and repair the vessel's equipment and installations to support training and operational needs including automation controls. Responsibilities include Electrical installation and repair to USCG/ABS standards.
  • Work independently and/or supervise student workers in the maintenance and repair of all electric motors, main and emergency switchboards, ventilation, fire detection system, ship general alarm, all vessel lighting systems, all batteries, deck equipment including cranes, winches and windless, and all other electrical related systems.
  • Assist the First and Chief Engineer in maintaining accurate shipboard work orders and maintenance records.
  • Assist with vessel and equipment familiarization training for marine engineering students.
  • Assist in planning and organizing a shipboard marine laboratory facility for the training of marine engineering students.
  • Supervise student workers in maintenance and repair activities.
  • Work with and assist the Chief Engineer and First Engineer in the preparation of parts orders and repair requirements for the training ship. Work with the Chief Engineer, First Engineer, and engine officers in preparation of MARAD work requests.
  • Work with ship logistics and materials coordinator and Chief engineers to maintain inventory of spares, consumables, and tools for maintenance at sea.
  • The incumbent may be assigned as the department tag-out/lock-out coordinator.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain TWIC.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the methods. materials, tools, and equipment used in the construction, installation, and maintenance. repair and operation of electrical components.
  • Ability to install and maintain writing, control, and lighting systems.
  • Ability to inspect and troubleshoot electrical components, transformers, and circuit breakers.
  • Ability to identify electrical problems using a variety of testing devices.
  • Thorough knowledge of repair, maintenance, troubleshooting, and overhaul.
  • Ability to apply previous experience and knowledge to the design of new applications;
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate the work of technical projects in the electrical field;
  • Ability to review and prepare specifications for technical equipment;
  • Ability to design, fabricate, and assemble devices;
  • Ability to analyze equipment problems and determine what repairs are needed;
  • Ability to install. replace, repair, and maintain a wide variety of equipment for the area of job assignment
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with crew, faculty, and cadets.
  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position;
  • Ability to make arithmetic computations where required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3 plus years as a ship's electrician is preferred.
  • QMED is preferred.
  • Merchant Marine Credential preferred
  • Knowledge of marine electrical equipment installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Knowledge of electronics equipment installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Knowledge of marine and automation equipment installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Proficient in the performance of shipboard emergency drills
  • Knowledge of electrical theory and ability to perform all required equipment inspection, evaluation of performance, troubleshooting, preventive and corrective maintenance, and minor repairs to shipboard electrical equipment
  • Knowledge of the Electrical Safety Program and safety requirements of the equipment worked on.

Special Conditions

  • The Marine Electrical Officer is under the general direction of the Chief Engineer. While maneuvering, the Ship's Electrician may be present in the engine room to assist with any kind of electrical and other emergencies. The Ship's Electrician will assist the deck department with electrical problems i.e., cranes, winches, windless, davits, etc.
  • Abide by uniform and grooming standards.

Cruise Requirements

  • The Ship's Electrician will be required to participate in the Academy's annual training cruises as a condition of employment. The candidate will be required to work a variety of shifts that may include working days, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. The successful candidate will be subject to the Academy's random drug testing program, and be required to complete a background investigation and pre-employment physical, including a drug test prior to beginning work. As required by Federal regulations, the candidate must be able to obtain a Merchant Mariners Document issued by the US Coast Guard and a TWIC card issued by the Transportation Safety Administration. In addition, each year the candidate must satisfactorily complete a physical and drug screening for participation in the training cruise.

Physical, Mental And Environmental Conditions

  • Up to 40% of the activities involve sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling or walking; involves lifting heavy weight objects limited to 50 pounds; may involve pushing and pulling objects within the weight limits. Activities occasionally involve climbing and working aloft. Ability to function successfully in limited living and working spaces, climb ship ladders and stairs and transit narrow hallways, and to perform assigned duties maintaining balance while occasionally experiencing rolling motion aboard ship.
  • Is exposed to excessive noise
  • Is around moving machinery
  • Is exposed to marked changes in temperature and/or humidity

Background Check: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check, fingerprinting, physical and drug testing) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.
