Job description

About The Job

NTNU NanoLab in Trondheim has an open permanent position for a senior engineer ('overingeniør') within our cleanroom.

You will use your in-depth fabrication and characterisation experience to train new users and help existing users achieve results in the cleanroom.

NTNU is the foremost technical university in Norway and located in Trondheim. NTNU NanoLab is a cleanroom of class 100-10.000 (ISO 5-7) equipped for nanostructuring and –characterisation by physical, chemical and biological methods. The cleanroom is a strategic, cross-disciplinary initiative at NTNU to promote and coordinate research in nanoscience, nanotechnology and functional materials. NTNU NanoLab is also part of a national infrastructure for micro- and nanofabrication (NorFab) and the European cleanroom consortium EuroNanoLab. The cleanroom is a hands-on infrastructure and is open for students, researchers and industry.

The engineers of NTNU NanoLab are competence holders for the cleanroom and its instrumentation. We have an international, exciting and positive work environment with good opportunities for both professional and personal development. We are currently expanding our technical staff of seven people with new positions. Therefore, we are looking for a senior engineer to contribute in our nanocharacterisation area, as well as to an operator service covering both nanocharacterisation and micro- or nanofabrication techniques.

Duties of the position

Your work covers the nanocharacterisation area of the cleanroom, which is equipped with several SEMs, two dual-beam FIB instruments, an AFM and several smaller characterisation instruments as well as thin-film, lithography and wet & dry etch processes. You will on-board new users and support existing users of the cleanroom using your expertise in process development, fabrication, and characterisation.

NanoLab has both academic and commercial users and the position may at times contribute to an operator service for nanostructuring and -characterisation for commercial customers. It includes troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of existing characterisation equipment, as well as procurement and installation of new equipment. You will work closely with the other expert engineers in characterisation, thin-film and lithography and tie together these areas of expertise to help our users get the most out of the opportunities the NanoLab offers.

Qualifications

  • Master/PhD in a relevant field is a requirement. Relevant work experience may compensate for formal education.
  • In-depth SEM and FIB experience is a requirement.
  • Advanced micro- and nanofabrication experience of complex, multilayer devices is highly beneficial (can be MEMS, CMOS or other relevant types of technology)
  • Relevant work experience is highly beneficial.
  • Experience within other micro- and nanocharacterisation techniques (such as AFM, ellipsometry and micro–Raman Spectroscopy) is highly beneficial.
  • Experience in servicing and maintaining advanced research equipment is beneficial.
  • Experience in process development is beneficial.
  • Experience in programming is beneficial.

About You

The successful candidate is practical, service minded and solution oriented. You are committed to quality and excellence in the field of nanocharacterization and to stay updated in the latest trends and advancements in characterization technologies. You wish to optimise and develop the cleanroom workflow and the characterisation equipment performance and share your knowledge with colleagues, cleanroom users and international networks. You have experience from a range of techniques used in academic cleanroom environment, such as NanoLab, and know what it takes to develop complex micro/nano devices. You are self-driven and have good co-operation, organisation, and prioritisation skills. Personal suitability is of high importance for this position. Good written and oral communication skills in both English and a Scandinavian language are required. Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language are expected to reach level 3 in NTNU's Norwegian course within 3 years.
