AirScale aims to revolutionize the way immobile patients' weight is measured in hospitals. The prevailing method demands the time of 2-3 nursing professionals, taking up about 10 minutes per patient, and thus is limited to one daily weighing. AirScale’s pioneering solution seeks to bypass this time-consuming routine while allowing more frequent measurements. In a hospital with 25 bedridden patients, this equates to freeing up one full-time position—a vital advantage given the swift rise in the elderly population and the persistent staffing challenges faced by healthcare institutions. Maintaining a high standard of care is paramount, and AirScale is poised to play a pivotal role in achieving that.
AirScale has received the financial support of Innouisse. The technology development is conducted with the support of the ETH Student Project House and in close collaboration with research partners, future suppliers, and potential customers. The first installation in a hospital bed was performed at Universitätsspital Zürich (USZ) in November 2023, followed by a demo at Zuger Kantonsspital (ZGKS).

Please note that at the initial stage, we are unable to offer a salary. The collaboration will be compensated with an equity stake in the company. We aim at securing the required funding within 2024.
Your Role:
• Solution Design: Contribute to the design of solutions and engage in innovative problem-solving.
• Feasibility Verification: Share responsibility for validating feasibility concepts and ensuring the desired product quality.
• Prototype Development: Collaborate within the team to overcome challenges in developing prototypes.
• Conduct Sprints: Lead sprint activities within the team based on product requirements during development.

Project description
The measurement of body weight is essential for patients in critical health situations, as it enables the identification of muscle loss, fluid loss, or water retention. Patients' weight must be measured daily to track changes in their condition, a process that takes 10 minutes and requires the assistance of 2-3 staff members.
AirScale has developed an innovative concept to measure the weight of immobile patients while in bed. By using a thin inflatable air mat, the patient's body weight is determined based on the increase in air pressure. The laborious process is reduced to the push of a button, freeing precious time of the immensely busy nursing staff. We aim at developing the least time and energy consuming weighing scale worldwide. In the long term, we expect our solution to become a standard feature of all hospital beds used in critical care and ICU.
The startup has received multiple grants and the support from Innosuisse. We have established a collaborative arrangement with the University Hospital Zurich (USZ) and the Cantonal Hospital Zug (ZGKS), serving as our implementation partners, to initiate a testing phase wherein the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) will undergo patient testing. The hospitals are actively engaged in the prospect of acquisition and seek to integrate their requirements during the developmental phase. They recognize the value of the solutions and are willing to invest resources during the testing phase.
