Job Overview Principal Metallurgist reporting to Senior Manager of Fractionation (Chemical Engineering).
Liaise with Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Technology Managers, Project Managers, Site Supervisors, clients, vendors, etc.
Experience with pressure vessels, heat transfer equipment, rotating equipment, and piping engineering.
Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities - Effectively communicate complex and technical solutions to other engineers and non-engineers.
- Assists with training other engineers by providing instruction on new technologies and/or specialization.
- Supports the development of new technologies and methods.
- Is a higher-level metallurgical engineer position and is looked to for technical expertise.
- Mechanical design and analysis support for basic engineering of licensed technologies.
- Conceptual studies, cost and planning studies, layouts, design calculations, specification development, supervising vendor packages for equipment and mechanical systems.
- Maintains and promotes a focus on Lummus end product whether engineering, fabrication, R&D, or design and fabrication of proprietary hardware.
- Ensures effective communication among other engineering disciplines.
- Ensures effective management of change.
- Assumes responsibility for cost, schedule, quantity, and budget control.
- Preparation of design calculations and reports for piping systems, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, expansion joints using Vessel design software, Piping Flexibility analysis, Mathcad, MS Excel, MS Word or other manual or automated methods.
- Review design calculations and reports of peers.
- R&D lab support: preparation of test scope/procedures and results reporting.
- Visits to domestic and international customer facilities and fabricators for design review, inspections, etc.
- Visits to pilot plant and R&D facilities.
- Domestic and international travel estimated at 20%, at a duration between 1-3 weeks.
Qualifications - Education: BS Metallurgy/Materials Science, higher degree preferred.
- 15 or more years' experience.
- Expert knowledge of USA (ASME, ASTM, AWS, NACE/AMPP, API, etc.) and International (GB, DIN, IS, TUV, JIS, etc.) design codes and standards.
- Professional or Chartered Engineering Status or ability to achieve status in 3-5 years.
- Current on latest scientific and engineering process.
