YOUR NEW ROLE, WHATS INVOLVED?
As an Electrical Utilities Engineer, you will work across the Energy Networks Discipline, reporting to the Technical Manager. You will be responsible for designing, planning and managing the electrical utility diversion packages for rail, highways, airport and water projects, in addition to electrical connections for large industrial, commercial and residential developments.
You will
- Design and develop electrical utility connections for significant industrial, commercial and residential developments from 11kV up to 132kV
- Producing standards for technical specifications for primary equipment and protection and control equipment.
- Prepare LV and HV Cable design as well as OHL diversions up to 33KV.
- Select and specify primary equipment and design HV substations from 11 kV to 132 kV.
- Work closely with the in-house CAD drafting team to generate equipment layouts, cable route drawings, construction, and legal plans for new HV connections.
- Prepare design packages for DNO contestable works from 11 kV to 132 kV, and risk registers ensuring technical risks are identified and mitigated.
- Apply working knowledge of CDM 2015 and carrying out duties of designer as per regulations.
- Draft proposals and develop scopes, including conceptual designs and execution plans.
- Generate engineering cost and man-hour estimates, as well as schedules.
- Create detailed engineering drawings for Extra High Voltage (EHV) projects, covering both Air Insulated Substations (AIS) and Gas Insulated Substations (GIS), ranging from 11kV up to 400kV (with a particular emphasis on 132kV voltages and above)
- Develop designs to support detailed engineering, such as Land Utilisation Plan, Elevations, Above and Below Grade Conduit layouts, Grounding layout & it’s connection details, Lighting and Lightning protection with respective details, Bill of Materials, CDM, MEWP layouts and Design Calculations.
- Possess knowledge of Busbar sizing, Sag Tension, and Short Circuit (strung bus and equipment bus) force calculations.
- Facilitate coordination of design activities across various departments, including Civil/Structural, Networks, and Transmission Line. Conduct design reviews, participate in virtual meetings, and collaborate closely with clients.
- Coordinate with team members and monitor project schedules, ensuring submissions meet high-quality standards.
- Produce comprehensive electrical substation design packages that comply with the required client technical standards or IEC/IEEE/NGTS.
- Undertake consultancy role on FEED stage projects, including production of technical reports and presentations.
- Maintain compliance to CDM Regulations and all other legal and regulatory requirements associated with the nature of substation and electrical system design.
- Collaborate with WSP UK office on design activities.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced team members.
- Develop and enhance processes, tools, and potentially implement new technologies into the design process.
- Periodic Quality check to be conducted for other engineers & designers.
- Exhibit ingenuity, foresight, and wise decision-making skills in proactively identifying and resolving challenges.
- Contribute to the progress and growth of departmental tools and workflows aimed at improving the effectiveness of design processes, specification development, and project implementation.
- Engage in training sessions and meetings dedicated to addressing targeted organizational initiatives.
- Drive ‘Safety by Design’ approach on all projects, always.
WE’D LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU IF YOU HAVE
- Possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution.
- Have a minimum of five years and a maximum of ten years of experience in the field of Substation Transmission & Distribution, Renewable (Onshore & Offshore wind/ Solar), BESS projects.
- Preferably familiar with UK projects. Experience of working in a lead substation design role on National Grid Electricity Transmission projects (or other UK utilities like SSEN, SPEN etc.) in the UK will be an added advantage.
- Thorough knowledge and experience applying National Grids Technical Specification, Technical Guidance Notes, and Design Handbooks relating to substations in the UK is expected.
- Understanding of the requirements of relevant UK Health & Safety legislation relating to design and construction work in the electricity supply industry.
- Membership in a relevant professional Engineering Institution, such as IET, CIGRE, IEC, IEEE, is desirable.
- Experience in Onshore wind, Offshore wind, Renewable (solar) and BESS projects is preferred.
- Experience with software such as CYMCAP, CDEGS s preferred.
- Familiarity with 3D tools for Engineering design is desirable.
- Strong proficiency in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient in utilizing standard engineering techniques and procedures.
- Demonstrates diligence, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Capable of managing tasks across multiple projects and handling conflicting deadlines.
- Able to work independently and/or as part of a project team.
