Under general supervision applies functional specifications and uses engineering tools to design hardware, electronic circuits, control systems or algorithms for product changes and new development. Uses software tools or applications to perform routine analysis to predict performance of electronic circuits or control systems and identifies design improvements by evaluating results. Contributes in reliability analysis such as risk assessments and Failure Mode Effects Analysis by compiling and examining data. Identifies the testing requirement at a system level with the emphasis on complying with test standards and Halliburton’s Health, Safety, and Environment procedures. Contributes to Halliburton’s Intellectual Property portfolio by preparing Invention Disclosures and recognizing ideas that have Intellectual Property potential without disclosing confidential information. Coordinates with project leads to produce project deliverables by assessing input requirements and applying functional specifications. Develops relationships through excellent communication skills and acts as a key resource to provide innovative solutions. May participate in professional societies in area of specialization. Skills acquired through the completion of an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering or similar discipline and 2 years of related experience. Completion of a masters degree in Electrical Engineering or similar discipline is preferred.
Role - Motor Control Firmware Engineer
Responsibilities -
- Modeling, design, prototyping, implementation, verification, and validation of motor controls for Haliburton Drilling & Wireline downhole/Surface tools. Actively collaborate with motor designers, firmware, hardware, and system engineering teams during the product life cycle.
- Creating motor control algorithms on Simulink, generate autocode, interface with firmware, deploying it on embedded platforms, verifying the design on Hardware-in-the-loop simulator, dynamometer and the assembled tool.
- Apply motor controls, as required, including- scalar control, vector (field-oriented) control, direct torque control, six-step or trapezoidal commutation, Clarke/Park transforms, flux-weakening, Maximum-Torque-Per-Amp, Maximum-Torque-Per-Volt, pulse width modulation schemes (sinusoidal, third harmonic injection, space vector, continuous, discontinuous), sensorless position and speed observers or utilizing position/speed sensors
- Understanding of classic and modern control theory: stability, controllability, observability, Bode plots, Nyquist diagrams, closed-loop transfer function, feed-forward, Laplace transform, z-transform, linear quadratic regulator, filter design, Kalman filters continuous and discrete time domains, PID regulators, adaptive control.
- Model motor loads and optimize motor control based on the load dynamics.
- Working proficiency with embedded microcontrollers or digital signal processors (architecture, peripherals, functioning, performance constraints)
- Working proficiency with high-quality embedded C/C++ code for embedded microcontrollers and integrating auto generated code with infrastructure code
- Experience with real-time simulation, model-based design, hardware-in-loop, and code generation using Simulink
- Experience with speed/positions sensors: Hall, encoders (incremental and absolute), resolvers
- Familiarity with analog signal conditioning electronics (amplifiers and filters) and current sensors
- Familiarity with related power electronics (three-phase inverters, MOSFETs, gate drivers) and required protections (Over/under voltage/current etc)
- Familiarity with induction, brushless DC, and permanent magnet synchronous motors (design topologies, geometry, materials, equivalent schemes, and modeling)
- Excellent problem-solving skills with a solid analytical and practical (hands-on) approach
- Present in design reviews of internal developments and review third party designs
- Document firmware designs, specifications, test plans, revisions and produce test reports
- Prepared to work on several projects at a given time or highly complicated projects that require a creative team work. Work with cross-functional teams during product life-cycle
- Excellent organization, interpersonal, leadership, analytical and problem solving skills.
- Using laboratory equipment such as Hardware-in-the-loop simulator, dynamometers, oscilloscopes, power and logic analyzers, power supplies, load boxes, data acquisition systems
- Work with electrical systems, firmware and mechanical engineers to develop solutions as required for the product.
- Support functional and qualification testing of the designed boards and sub-assemblies. Support functional testing for motor controllers on Hardware-in-the-loop simulator, dynamometers and on assembled tool.
A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering or similar discipline and a minimum of two years related experience are required for the position. A master’s degree or PhD in electrical engineering with emphasis on motor control and license/charter as a Professional Engineer are preferred.
Role - Power Electronics Engineer
Responsibilities -
- Design, simulation, development, implementation, verification and validation of power electronics based systems & components used in downhole logging applications where the systems must withstand harsh environments and exhibit high reliability
- Development of common AC/DC and DC/DC converter topologies & DC/AC 3-phase inverters to drive BLDC motors
- Knowledge of complete power electronics converter systems including active/passive component selection, input/output filter design, compensation circuit design, gate driver circuits, etc. for power rating of up to 10s of KW and under 5KV
- Experience in design and specification of power electronic magnetics and BLDC motors
- Understanding of various motor control methods such as Field Oriented/Trapezoidal schemes and its impact on the hardware design
- Keen understanding of wide-bandgap power semiconductor devices, in particular their high-temperature characteristics and thermal management
- PCB design and layout, in particular for high power switching
- Troubleshooting of power electronics and proficiency in using lab equipment
- Working knowledge in commonly used circuit simulators (LTSPICE, PSPICE, etc.) and math tools (Matlab, MathCAD, etc.)
- Functional and qualification testing of the designed boards and sub-assemblies. May involve Hardware-in-the-loop testing of actual systems with dynamometers, etc.
- Working on several tasks in parallel on highly complicated projects in large team settings.
- Excellent organization, interpersonal, leadership, analytical and problem solving skills.
