Job Title: Horticulturist

Job Summary: The Horticulturist at ISB will oversee all aspects of campus landscaping and horticulture to maintain and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the 45-acre campus. Additionally, the role includes developing indoor plant initiatives for all office spaces and places a strong emphasis on preserving the overall campus greenery and biodiversity.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Landscape Management (15%)
- Develop and execute landscape plans utilizing Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, ensuring precise spatial arrangements and aesthetic diversity.
- Implement an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system, utilizing advanced technologies for monitoring and addressing pest and disease issues.
- Supervise and train the groundskeeping team on modern horticultural equipment and practices.
2. Softscape Design and Implementation (10%)
- Utilize Geographic Information System (GIS) tools to analyze and plan softscape designs based on environmental conditions and campus layout.
- Implement sustainable softscape projects using techniques such as xeriscaping and permaculture.
- Utilize Building Information Modeling (BIM) for collaborative softscape design with architects and planners.
3. Sustainable Practices and Compliance (10%)
- Integrate smart irrigation systems and sensor technologies for water management, ensuring optimal usage and conservation.
- Monitor and enforce compliance with environmental regulations, staying informed about emerging sustainability standards.
- Implement a comprehensive recycling program for organic waste generated from horticultural activities.
4. Budget Management and Price Negotiation (10%)
- Utilize financial modelling tools to forecast and manage the horticulture department's annual budget effectively.
- Employ cost-benefit analysis for procurement decisions, ensuring the acquisition of sustainable and cost-effective materials.
- Implement Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for tracking budget performance and resource allocation.
- Conduct price negotiations with horticulture vendors to secure favourable terms and optimize procurement costs.
5. Horticulture Vendor Management (10%)
- Source and evaluate horticulture vendors, ensuring the selection of reputable and reliable suppliers.
- Manage vendor relationships, including performance evaluations and resolution of any issues.
- Collaborate with vendors to stay updated on new products, technologies, and industry trends.
6. Operations and Maintenance (15%)
- Timely assessment of Service Level Agreements (SLAs) to ensure vendor compliance and service quality.
- Prepare regular reports detailing horticultural expenses, providing insights and recommendations for cost optimization.
- Proactively plan and prepare for seasonal plantings, ensuring a vibrant and varied campus landscape throughout the year.
- Oversee the clearing of stormwater drains, reviewing water supplies, and managing the supply of manure and equipment inventories.
- Implement precise budget management practices to optimize resource utilization.
7. Community Engagement and Safety (10%)
- Organize small organic sales within the campus community, promoting sustainable and locally sourced produce.
- Maintain the cleanliness of all pathways, ensuring a welcoming and safe environment for the campus community.
- Conduct daily walk-arounds to assess the condition of green spaces, identify maintenance needs, and address any safety concerns.
- Ensure safety compliance of all horticultural staff, providing training and implementing protocols to minimize risks.
8. Overall Campus Greenery and Biodiversity (10%)
- Champion the importance of overall campus greenery, developing strategies for enhancing and preserving the visual appeal of green spaces.
- Implement initiatives to preserve and enhance the biodiversity of the campus flora and fauna.
- Collaborate with environmental experts for the protection and propagation of indigenous plant and animal species.
9. Indoor Plants Development (5%)
- Implement a plant management system utilizing Internet of Things (IoT) sensors for real-time monitoring of indoor plant health.
- Collaborate with interior designers to integrate biophilic design principles for optimal placement of indoor plants.
- Conduct workshops on indoor plant care, utilizing virtual reality (VR) simulations for hands-on training.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, or a related field.
- Proven experience in horticulture, landscaping, and softscape design.
- Strong knowledge of local plant species, soil conditions, and climate.
- Excellent project management and leadership skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
- Effective communication and teaching skills.
- Familiarity with sustainable horticultural practices.
- Understanding of and commitment to compliance with environmental regulations and standards.
