Mechanical Design Engineer - Charging Station
Location
Bangalore | India
Job description
You’ll be working with the product and engineering team.
This team runs on coffee with an infectious passion to build products that have never been built before. Our Flexible Energy Stack consists of the e^pack (battery pack) and e^pump (charging station) which together unlock 15-minute rapid charging.
Our philosophy: Break. Believe. Build
Break stuff. Break assumptions. Break the thumb rule.
Believe in the team. Believe in the process. Believe through failures.
Build fast. Build passionately. Build to simplify.
What you will do:
Exponent’s USP of 15 min fast charging and life of 3000 cycles for e^pack today is being achieved to a great extent because of the maverick e^pump which has two major functions
- Supply of current up to 600A to charge the e^pack at a very high C rate which is 3x what the industry typically does.
- Integration of an HVAC unit for liquid cooling of e^pack while charging which is a state-of-art, first-in-the-world implementation.
Your job will be to ensure this unique piece of art which is the e^pump works as intended by addressing the below problems
- Packaging of all parts within a very tight space (real estate is expensive, duh) which includes the electrical subsystem, the liquid cooling unit, HVAC, and also a pneumatic subsystem which is used in a quirky way (you’ll only find out when you join us).
- Enhancing the user experience which includes space design, connector handling, and physical UI of the charger.
- Addressing Thermals, structural integrity, and mechanical and electrical integration between all the subsystems in e^pump
Responsibilities:
- Design of a bunch of sheet metal parts such as enclosures, electrical panels, etc., for optimal packaging of components within the e^pump.
- Structurally sound and minimal design that can satisfy the thermals and safety requirements of the pump and at the same time have serviceability and cost in mind.
- Conceptual design is driven by requirements, first principles, and theoretical calculations.
- Should be capable of doing tolerance stacks for mechanical assemblies.
- Preparing test plans at subsystem level and at an overall e^pump level to stress the different components and entire product.
- Should interact with part manufacturers and assembly teams and mold design based on DFM and DFA feedback.
- Drive RCAs to close bugs seen during testing and those coming from deployed e^pumps.
The ideal candidate requires:
- Experience in electro-mechanical packaging.
- Experience in thermal systems design with a solid understanding of fundamentals of conductive and convective heat transfer mechanisms. Also, be well versed with the basic functioning of refrigeration systems.
- Experienced in documentation of different steps involved in taking a product from concept to production such as concept design, design iteration log, theoretical calculation, FMEA, DFX, DVP, AICTQ, component inspection plan, etc
- Knowledgeable in Materials(Metals / Plastics / Composites/Elastomers) and material selection based on requirements and functionality.
- Excellent Mathematical and Analytical skills
- Hands-on experience with IP sealing, optimizing Mechanical packaging for weight & volume, and cost.
- Well versed in fundamental electrical concepts and electrical components
- Experience with fluid systems and knowledge of fluid line and pneumatic line components.
- Should have gone through a product development cycle from the concept stage to stabilization of the production stage
What matters:
- Quality of work
- Approach towards problem-solving
- Dissatisfaction towards mediocre work
- Resilient attitude to bounce back after failing
About Us
Exponent simplifies energy for EVs.
Co-founded by Arun Vinayak (Ather Energy's Founding Partner & Former Chief Product Officer) and Sanjay Byalal (Former hardware strategic sourcing and cell strategy lead, Ather and Former Supply Chain Lead, HUL), Exponent focuses on solving two sides of the energy problem by building the e^pump (charging station) and e^pack (battery pack) which together unlock 15-min rapid charging.
The 150+ strong team of passionate builders have a ton of EV experience and are currently looking for more builders to join one of the best EV teams in India to build & scale Exponent.
