This position will be hybrid requiring a few days per week in office. You can be based in our office in Washington DC, London or The Hague. Existing work authorization is required at the time of application submission. WRI is unable to sponsor any visa work sponsorship for this position.

About the Program:

The Open Timber Portal (OTP) is a project within WRI's Forest Governance and Policy team (FGP). The OTP is a web platform that promotes compliance with legal requirements in timber harvest and trade by compiling information from government, private sector and third-party forest monitors in producer countries. The OTP brings transparency to timber operations by making public previously inaccessible information about on-the-ground management practices and compliance with timber legality requirements. It compiles information from three different sources: official concession boundaries and the list of registered timber producers from the government documents uploaded voluntarily by timber producers to demonstrate compliance and observations by third party forest monitors. The OTP was designed by the World Resources Institute (WRI) in consultation with government, private sector and civil society actors.

Job Highlight:

Reporting to Director - Forest Governance and Policy, you will provide strategic and technical leadership for the Open Timber Portal, including developing and implementing an engagement strategy for the Open Timber Portal and related FGP resources for import country users, fundraising for the Open Timber Portal and related FGP resources, and manage the Open Timber Portal team. You will be supported by a small team of three staff, and will work with the rest of the FGP team on related tools and projects.

What will you do:

Strategic and technical leadership for the Open Timber Portal (40%):

• Review and update the vision, strategy and theory of change for the OTP
• Manage the OTP team of 10+ staff, consultants and implementing partners. Lead the hiring process for the OTP staff and consultants. Set team priorities and workplan and create opportunities for professional development for staff
• Represent the OTP internally and externally as its primary spokesperson
• Lead, coordinate and oversee outreach and engagement efforts to increase the uptake and impact of the OTP.
• Oversee budget and financial decisions, working with the FGP Director and Operations Manager to ensure compliance with WRI policies and procedures.

Fundraising and outreach (40%):

• Lead fundraising efforts. Steward existing donors and cultivate new ones. Lead proposal development to ensure that the OTP has a sustainable funding pipeline commensurate with its ambitions around scale and impact
• Develop an engagement strategy for OTP users in import countries, with a particular focus on Europe. Implement engagement strategy through consistent outreach and communication with target audiences
• Oversee OTP outreach and user engagement. Lead user engagement in Europe
• Ensure that research, analysis, and communications products produced by the OTP team meet WRI's high standards of quality

Manage other online FGP resources (20%):

• Oversee the update and quality control of content on FGP tools and websites, working with the FGP communications lead and other FGP staff
• Develop a user engagement strategy for relevant FGP tools and websites, building on the OTP engagement strategy
• Coordinate with data initiatives across WRI programs, centres , and international offices.

What will you need:

• Education: You have completed a bachelor's degree in natural , environmental science , social sciences , management or related field
• Experience: You have minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience working with management, trade or monitoring of tropical forests and timber
• You have worked on forest policies and laws, forest management and law enforcement practices, governance and institutional structures, forest and land tenure regimes in Central Africa, West Africa, Latin America, or Asia
• E xperience working on conceptualizing and managing information sources such as websites to support forest governance and natural resource management
• Languages: Professional competency in French, Spanish, and English required
• Requirements: Existing work authorization is required where this position. WRI is unable to authorize visa work authorization

Potential Salary: Salary is based on the scale within the country and is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors. WRI offers a competitive remuneration and benefits package.
