The American Chemical Society (ACS) is the world’s largest scientific membership association, with a mission to “advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and its people”.

ACS Publications is a Division of the ACS and has all the characteristics of a medium-large scientific and technical publishing organization. It is one of two Divisions charged with serving the dual function of generating a reliable annual surplus to support the Society’s programmatic activities, while also fulfilling a core goal of the Society in advancing knowledge in the field of chemistry and the chemical enterprise. The Division publishes 80+ high-quality peer-reviewed journals covering the breadth of chemistry and allied fields, as well as numerous other high-quality products and services of benefit to the global community.

The Journals Publishing Group consists of six main teams: Business Intelligence & Analytics, Chemical & Engineering News, Global Editorial Operations, Global Editorial Strategy, Global Production Operations, and Strategic Partnerships, China. These teams collaborate to optimize the editorial direction and production of our journals, and to ensure that our authors and reviewers have a positive publishing experience. In support of that mission, the Global Editorial Strategy team focuses on the effective operations and strategic development of the suite of ACS Publications’ journals, both hybrid and open access titles. This team delivers new products on an annual and ongoing basis based on an assessment of the existing portfolio relative to the research landscape. The Global Editorial Strategy team also provides strategic guidance to ACS Editors-in-Chief to maximize the impact and success of the journals and is central to ensuring the Editors and editorial direction of the journals optimally serve the mission of the ACS.

Position Summary: The Team Lead, Development Editor Workflow, Global Editorial Strategy, works with ACS staff from Global Editorial Operations (GEO), Business Intelligence & Analytics, IT, ACS Editors, and vendors to drive Development Editor workflow. The roles and responsibilities of the incumbent cover project management, people management, communication, operational efficiency & continuity, proactive troubleshooting, and timely monitoring of the portfolio Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for a suite of ACS journals. The incumbent will be responsible for proactive resource planning, development, training, and deployment while maintaining operational continuity and delivering high quality work. The Team Lead manages a team of Development Editors with assigned day-to-day responsibilities for specific editorial functions. This position reports to the Associate Publisher based in ACSI office, New Delhi.

Position Accountabilities: Ensuring smooth functioning of triage workflow in partnership with GEO team members and relevant stakeholders while improving operational efficiency. This includes monitoring and reporting on Triage Workflow KPIs. Adding new journals in the triage workflow, including the following. a) Pre-launch preparation: Identifying relevant stakeholders, their roles, responsibilities, and influences; understanding drivers and blockages for triage launch from Editors-in-Chief (EiCs) and other contributors; effective and efficient communication with relevant stakeholders ensuring smooth launch and post-launch functioning. Builds and maintains robust documentation capturing finer details of workflow, helping effective review and communication with different stakeholders. b) Regularly capturing all activities necessary for standardization and defining baseline for respective journals. c) Leading monthly comprehensive reviews with internal stakeholders. d) Streamlining and standardization of the triage workflow. Maintaining responsibility for the transfer efficiency and effectiveness of manuscripts for the overseen portfolio, ensuring relevant journals are part of the transfer destination and enabling smooth transfer. Establishes, monitors, and reports on manuscript transfer KPIs. Determines tactics, drives discussions with respective journals leading to positive outcomes. Interfaces with staff to develop and encourage tactics that aim to improve submission and publication rates for transferred manuscripts. Provides regular implementation progress and troubleshoots implementation challenges. Participating in recruitment, hiring, and training efforts. Developing and maintaining documentation to support candidate screening and new staff/vendor onboarding. Monitors performance of staff and provides regular actionable/constructive feedback. Building productive internal/external working relationships. Consulting with management to influence decisions. Providing coaching and guidance to the work team and will be responsible for supervising a small work team. Serving as a liaison on cross-functional teams.

Requires Experience and Education: Minimum of 2 years of experience after Ph.D. Degree. Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology/Bioengineering, Environmental Sciences, Materials Science and Engineering, and other branches of Physical or Engineering Sciences required. Ability to work with diverse stakeholders with proven negotiating and convincing skills while being easy to work with. Ability to handle change, demonstrate agile, flexible and adaptable attitude. Proven ability to make well-reasoned decisions and lead multi-location teams. Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities. Adept at prioritization, adequately leverage resources to deliver more in less. Excellent written and verbal communication prowess with both technical and nontechnical audiences demonstrating thought clarity. Leadership, people and project management skills. This position is based in Delhi office of the American Chemical Society and requires occasional travel (within and outside India).
