Overview:
As a Life Underwriter you play a crucial role in the insurance industry by assessing risks and determining the insurability of applicants. Your meticulous analysis and decisionmaking skills directly impact the companys profitability and risk management strategies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluating insurance applications and determining the level of risk
- Reviewing medical and financial documents to assess applicants eligibility
- Applying underwriting guidelines to make decisions regarding coverage
- Communicating with agents and applicants to gather necessary information
- Collaborating with actuaries and other underwriters to analyze and mitigate risks
- Staying updated on industry regulations and best practices
- Providing recommendations for policy modifications and endorsements
- Assessing reinsurance needs for highrisk cases
- Monitoring and managing the performance of existing policies
- Participating in underwriting meetings and discussions
- Contributing to underwriting process improvements and efficiency
- Assisting in training and mentoring junior underwriters
- Preparing reports and maintaining accurate documentation
- Assisting with special projects and underwriting audits
- Collaborating with claims and legal teams when necessary
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Business Finance Mathematics or related field
- Proven experience in life insurance underwriting
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology and health conditions
- Familiarity with underwriting software and tools
- Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills
- Solid decisionmaking abilities based on risk assessment
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Effective communication and negotiation skills
- Ability to work efficiently in a fastpaced environment
- Uptodate knowledge of insurance laws regulations and guidelines
- Professional certifications such as FLMI or ALU are a plus
- Adherence to ethical standards and confidentiality guidelines
- Excellent problemsolving and multitasking abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and underwriting tools
