Job Title - Sr. Lab Manager - Evonik Organic Chemistry Research Lab (EVOCRL) Mumbai, India
Business Line - Research Development &Innovation (RD&I)
Reporting to – Head of RD&I India
Entity & Work Location - Evonik India, Mumbai
Purpose of the Position :
- Represent as Head of EVOCRL lab in India region and lead a team of 4 members as a start (PhD's, MSc's) to develop new product in line with the business requirements
- Ensure development of the required infrastructure, competencies & capability at the center to deliver project within the desired quality, quantity and timelines.
- Close alignment with the Global & Regional Business Heads for understanding of unmet needs, evaluating business opportunities and proposing projects. Drive the projects to develop new product / technology solutions based on organic chemistry platform.
- Provide technical support to the team and suggest creative solutions through understanding of new and emerging technologies inside and outside Evonik
- Collaborate with various functions such as Business Heads, Application Team, IP & Patent, Procurement, Production related to new product development as per the Innovation Process.
- Ensure focus on sustainability both related to chemistries & operations, in alignment with Evonik's target
- Establish network within the RD&I team located in different regions for technical exchange, co-development and to foster innovation culture
- Setting up of the organic chemistry synthesis lab and build up the team (incl. hiring of right candidate).
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise a team of up to 4 team members (PhD's/MSc's) in an organic synthesis lab.
- Develop complex organic-chemical syntheses and production processes for new products for various applications (such as ingredient for personal care, coating additives, polymer additives, and others); lead transfer activities to pilot plant and production.
- Achieve efficient management and alignment with key stakeholders such as Business Line Heads, Technical heads through regular technical meetings and effective communication
- Manage the innovation process as per Evonik Accolade process
- Responsible for the safety in the lab including proper documentation status, ensure compliance with relevant regulations and guidelines.
- Lead and implement projects to develop and produce new products on time and within budget.
- Collaborate efficiently with internal and external customers and service provider.
- Communicate with Global team on regular basis to make sure an excellent alignment of regional and global activities can be obtained.
- Ensure that the technical know how of team is constantly developed.
- Ensure proper utilization of resource through efficient prioritization of projects and work loads.
- Establish innovative processes and technologies within the framework of strategic projects.
- Ensure Compliance of self and the team.
- Create an encouraging and motivating work culture for the team members.
- Ensure career path for the team member is discussed and developed constantly.
Requirements
- PhD in Organic Chemistry (oleochemistry is preferred) with 10+ years of industrial experience in leading R&D synthesis team (experience in specialty chemicals is preferred)
- Broad scientific knowledge in the field of organic/oleochemical chemistry, understanding of structure function relationship with respect to different applications, including home & personal care, pharmaceutical, coating & paint, polymer, surfactant, lubricant & others.
- Candidates having experience in synthesizing various surface active molecules, active ingredients will be preferred. Subject matter expert in few topics is desirable.
- Complete understanding of end-to-end process related to new product development is essential: Scouting, feasibility, prototyping, scale up, tech transfer and production activities.
- Well versed with safety lab practices, EHS, process risk analysis and developing mitigation plan.
- Experience in Stakeholder Management, Project Management and Cost Management (Candidate experienced in handling Global R&D project will be preferred).
- High level of technical communication & planning skills is needed.
- People Management Capabilities: experience in leading and mentoring team, developing career path, creditable work culture, embracing diversity and inclusivity, collaborating easily cross-geographic teams.
- Building trust, reliability and capacity to perform well under pressure – also in times of heavy work load.
