The Corporate Sustainability team is a dynamic and strategic central team that directs, develops, and implements the key pillars of Sustainability across Western Digital. The charter of this department is to operationalize all Sustainability prerogatives around Production, Product life cycle, Supply chain, Society and Governance, by building capability, setting priorities and installing a data-driven paradigm of execution. This team sets the strategy incorporating market forces, regulatory environment, stakeholder feedback with a mission of driving a triple bottom-line of profit, people and planet.
Job Description
This Program Manager of Sustainability role seeks a dynamic and results-driven team member who will lead product lifecycle related sustainability initiatives, develop, and implement the necessary tools and processes and implement sustainability priorities within the supply chain. Key goals for the role are to improve recycled content within input materials, implement circularity initiatives including enhanced and responsible end-of-life options, drive reduction of upstream emissions inherited from suppliers, subcons and JV partners.
Key Tasks would include project implementation of innovation/R&D work within the manufacturing setup to capture value from alternate materials, identifying and building green product roadmaps and influencing the product management teams with value proposition. Central to the role is to drive circularity and embed sustainability within design choices. This might include executing paths towards green design and green packaging, collaborating with the sales and service teams as well as manufacturing to build processes that design out waste, keeps our products and materials in use and regenerating natural systems to build a circular economy.
The ideal candidate will have strong communication and collaboration skills, perseverance to work through towards the end goal and set a good pace.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams such BU’s, Product teams, Factories, and Sales teams to achieve green design and product lifecycle objectives
- Project Manage and deliver initiatives to achieve product life cycle, recycling, circular economy and green design.
- Determine patterns around product life cycle carbon and other sustainability parameters and translate them into systems’ requirements and recommend platforms
- Determine mechanisms to embed Sustainability and Green Design elements into the Product Design process, collaborating with the BU teams
- Drive operationalization of product flows that enable re-use and recyclability of packing materials, recovery of components
- Build and execute business cases for re-use/recycle
- Identify and drive rare earth material conservation initiatives
- Build and execute a roadmap of transitioning from a linear economy to a circular economy
- Identify and develop tools and approaches to enable R&D and product/packaging development teams to help them understand the environmental impact of their ingredients, materials, and packaging choices across the product lifecycle.
- Serve as a “connector” and share best practices across diverse business segments on sustainable product design and development.
- Implement processes and build capacity with suppliers to progressively drive the inherited upstream Scope 3 emissions down
- In addition, serve as the advocate on all Sustainability topics partnering with the Sourcing and Procurement teams to drive Sustainability within the supply chain – encompassing, all aspects of E, S and G.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree is a plus
- B.S. degree required (in relevant areas such as Engineering, Supply Chain, Business, or allied discipline), with at least 7 years of experience in product development, design or manufacturing
- MBA or any other relevant degree /certification in electronics/material sciences/ environmental sciences/sustainability
