JOB TITLE: Domestic Violence Justice Coordinator
POSITION STATUS: Regular, Full-Time
EXEMPT STATUS: Non-Exempt
PAY SCALE GRADE: 13, 14, 15
REPORTS TO: Staff Attorney
BRIEF SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide advice, technical assistance and training to the region’s tribes in the development and implementation of tribal justice systems, in particular tribal courts as it relates to domestic violence issues (hereafter “tribal justice systems”). This will include developing and preparing training material, handouts, and presentations.
- Provide advice, technical assistance and training to the region’s tribes in the development of tribal organic, judicial, regulatory, and other laws, and administrative policies pertaining to domestic violence issues (hereafter “tribal laws and policies”).
- Assist Staff Attorney with creation of new laws and policies, revision of existing laws and policies, and codification of unwritten customary law.
- Coordinate with and provide guidance to Kawerak program staff, with regard to tribal justice systems, tribal laws and policies, and related matters.
- Responsible for the planning, development and implementation of the Domestic Violence Tribal Court Project, including budgeting, reporting, and ensuring the goals and objectives of the program are achieved.
- Assist in developing tribal laws, policies, court documents, forms, memoranda of agreements and other materials for development, implementation and operation of tribal justice systems pertaining to domestic violence issues.
- Develop training programs for development, implementation and operation of tribal justice systems incorporating tribal laws, policies, court documents, forms, memoranda of agreements and other materials developed for tribal justice systems. Disseminate information to tribes regarding available options for tribal justice systems. Provide one-on-one training to develop, implement and operate specific tribal justice system(s) chosen by tribes. Provide technical assistance in actual proceedings.
- Coordinate and oversee an annual regional Domestic Violence training, in conjunction with the Staff Attorney.
9.. Assist tribal governments/courts in developing case management systems, including computer database, case files, and records retention policies.
- Call into tribal court hearings to assist judges with issuing domestic violence protective orders or other hearings as needed. Assist with drafting court orders, filing court orders internally and with state databases.
- Assist tribal governments in identifying and applying for grants or other funding opportunities to sustain tribal justice systems.
- Other duties as assigned by the Staff Attorney.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent work experience required. Prior education or experience related to law and/or tribal courts preferred. Working knowledge of Alaska Native legal issues preferred.
- Must possess strong research skills, writing and verbal communication skills and organizational skills.
- Must be dependable, self-motivated and able to work with minimum supervision.
- Experience in cross-cultural and rural environments preferred.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Windows, and internet skills required.
- Must be willing to travel extensively within the Bering Straits Region.
