Job description

Materials Engineer, Launch Vehicle Design Cosmicport Space Technology Private Limited, Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu

Department:

R&D, Launch Vehicle Employment Type:

Full-Time Minimum Experience:

Mid-level

Cosmicport, a space technology startup, is building a launch vehicle tailored for small and medium-range satellites, in addition to advancing Earth Observation Satellites (EOS) designed for SunSynchronous Orbits (SSO) to serve commercial entities. Our cost-effective reusable launch vehicle provides precise and dependable launch solutions, facilitating the establishment of constellation platforms. As a Material Engineer, you will be responsible for researching, selecting, testing, and implementing advanced materials and manufacturing processes to optimize the design, manufacturing, and operational aspects of launch vehicles, and the incumbent will be an integral part of the Research and Development (R&D) launch vehicle propulsion team.

Responsibilities: Research, evaluate, and select advanced composite materials suitable for use in launch vehicle structures, including airframes, fairings, payload adapters, and other critical components. Develop material specifications, ensuring compliance with industry standards and project requirements. Conduct comprehensive material testing and analysis to assess mechanical properties, thermal characteristics, durability, and compatibility with space environments. Collaborate with manufacturing engineers to develop and optimize fabrication processes for aerospace-grade materials, ensuring consistency, quality, and cost-effectiveness. Investigate material failures and anomalies during testing or operation and develop corrective actions to improve material performance and prevent recurrence. Work closely with design and structural engineering teams to optimize material usage and minimize weight while maintaining structural integrity and safety margins. Assess material compatibility with space environments, including exposure to extreme temperatures, vacuum, radiation, and micrometeoroids. Perform life cycle assessments of materials to understand their durability, degradation, and environmental impact over the lifespan of the launch vehicle. Propose sustainable and cost-effective material alternatives when applicable. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including design engineers, systems engineers, propulsion engineers, and manufacturing personnel to achieve project objectives and deliver high-performance launch vehicles. Maintain detailed documentation of material specifications, test results, design analyses, and technical reports, and effectively communicate findings to internal teams and external stakeholders.

Basic Qualification: Master’s, or Ph.D. degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. 1+ years of professional experience in materials selection, testing, and characterization, preferably in the aerospace or space launch industry, project/research-based experience, or a combination of both. Strong knowledge of advanced materials such as composites, alloys, ceramics, and ablative materials, and their properties and applications in aerospace systems. Familiarity with relevant industry standards and specifications (e.g., ASTM, MIL, NASA standards). Proficiency in materials testing techniques, including mechanical testing, thermal analysis, spectroscopy, microscopy, and non-destructive testing methods. Experience with materials modeling and simulation software tools is desirable. Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and meet project deadlines in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Knowledge of additive manufacturing processes.

Preferred Skills: Experience with FEA software tools such as ANSYS or Abaqus. Strong understanding of failure modes in commercial products. Proven track record of developing new processes, improving efficiencies, and successfully transferring to production. Programming skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB, and LabVIEW) for data analysis and model development. Ability to deliver against an aggressive schedule.

Compensation will be determined on a case-by-case basis with consideration of knowledge, skills, education, and experience. You may be eligible for annual bonuses. Insurance coverages and retirement plans are being worked upon and will be disclosed after hire. We are an Equal Opportunity Employer - employment is solely based on merit, and qualifications. There will be no discrimination on any grounds.

How to Apply: If you are a highly motivated individual with a passion for launch vehicle materials engineering and a track record of success in this field, please submit your resume

Together, we will shape the future of launch vehicle technology and make a meaningful impact on space exploration.
