Job description

Genetic counseling is an important aspect of cancer treatment that can help individuals better understand their risk of developing certain types of cancer. Through genetic counseling, patients can learn about the role of genetics in cancer and whether they may be at increased risk due to their family history or inherited genetic mutations.

Here at Continental Hospitals, we offer genetic counseling services to help patients make informed decisions about their treatment and risk reduction options. Our genetic counselors are highly trained professionals who work closely with patients to assess their personal and family medical history, as well as provide information on available testing options and the implications of test results.

Assesses family and medical history and counsels patients and/or families in cases of genetic disorders or birth defects. Discusses benefits and limitations of genetic testing options. Obtains informed consent from interested patients. Assists families in understanding genetic disorders in their families; probable course of the disorder, available management strategies, medical recommendations from the geneticist and recurrence risks. Documents in patient charts and develops follow-up recommendations for patient; documents cases and maintains appropriate records, ensuring confidentiality. Develops and presents educational and related programs as appropriate. Coordinates and supports the execution of research protocol as needed; including recruitment and assessment of research subjects, provision of patient advice and support, and maintenance of research records. Performs associated administrative or clerical tasks, which may include special projects, correspondence, and program funding activities. Teaches and supervises training activities of residents and/or other health care professionals.
