Job description

The Neurosurgery Technician is a critical member of the neurosurgical team, responsible for providing technical support during surgical procedures involving the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. Working under the supervision of neurosurgeons and other healthcare professionals, the Neurosurgery Technician assists in the preparation, setup, and maintenance of surgical equipment and instruments, ensuring a safe and efficient operating room environment.

Responsibilities:

  1. Surgical Preparation: Assist in preparing the operating room for neurosurgical procedures by ensuring all necessary equipment, instruments, and supplies are available and properly sterilized. Set up surgical trays and assist with patient positioning as required.

  2. Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain specialized neurosurgical equipment, including microscopes, stereotactic frames, neuro-navigation systems, and intraoperative monitoring devices. Troubleshoot equipment issues as they arise and communicate any malfunctions to appropriate personnel.

  3. Surgical Assistance: Provide direct assistance to neurosurgeons and other surgical team members during procedures. Hand instruments and supplies to surgeons as needed, maintain a sterile field, and anticipate the needs of the surgical team to facilitate smooth and efficient operations.

  4. Patient Care: Assist with patient care before, during, and after surgery. Transport patients to and from the operating room, assist with positioning and draping, and provide emotional support as needed.

  5. Sterile Technique: Adhere to strict sterile technique protocols to prevent surgical site infections and maintain patient safety. Follow established guidelines for handling and disposing of surgical instruments and supplies.

  6. Documentation: Maintain accurate records of surgical procedures, including instrument counts, specimen labeling, and other relevant documentation. Ensure all required paperwork is completed promptly and accurately.

  7. Team Collaboration: Collaborate effectively with other members of the surgical team, including surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and surgical technologists. Communicate clearly and professionally to ensure optimal patient care and surgical outcomes.

  8. Compliance: Adhere to all relevant regulations, policies, and procedures governing neurosurgical practices and patient care. Stay informed about advancements in neurosurgical technology and techniques through ongoing education and training.
