The Packet Network Architecture team is a specialised team responsible for the packet network technology strategy, design and roadmap. The team owns different technology domains from traditional IP and Ethernet to SD-WAN, NFV and SDN.

The successful candidate will join the Packet Network Architecture team to contribute to deliver Colt's SDN Strategy. As a specialist in packet network technologies, they will work on creating network and system designs to deliver Colt SD-WAN technology over Colt's packet network, IQnet. They will own high-level design of standard/bespoke features and manage the life-cycle of the designs along the delivery cycle.

They will also work very closely with the engineering team to achieve successful implementations of the network designs.

Key accountabilities

Scope:

As a Packet Network Architect, the successful candidate will focus on:

Network design: Create the high-level network design supporting the SD-WAN overlay implementation requirements over the underlaying packet network.
Feature design: Create the feature design updates for traditional packet products to accommodate a seamless overlay-underlay integration.
Introduce automation/assurance by design: Ensure any design considers network automation principles and leverages on Colt's SDN technology. This must apply not only for service activation but also for assurance.
Product/Sales/Engineering engagement: Able to deliver significant stakeholder influence to resolve problems. Expected to give technical guidance to others to help resolve issues outside of the domain of the role
Getting the basics right: ensure the network architecture and configuration they produce works correctly, can be deployed smoothly and adheres to or exceeds Colt's standards.
Commercial/cost implications: Understand cost and commercial implications for stakeholders. Produce cost models that reflect that understanding and that stakeholders will buy into.
Lead technical virtual teams and support escalations: Be a trusted leader and advisor for the different stakeholders, support teams dealing with escalations and be a trusted advisor to the customer, in case of direct engagement.


Key Tasks:

Understand and produce the engineering requirements and designs for integrating Colt's underlay and overlay networks, with automation built-in by design.
Oversee the development and testing of integration.
Create and own architecture and design guides.
Manage architecture refresh processes triggered by end of life
Socialize high level design with Service Delivery, Network Operations, IT and TAC and agree operational models as required.
Own and drive short/mid-term strategy. Engage with Strategy and Transformation for long term business evolution. Explore and evaluate new technologies (design and lead PoCs and trials)
Own or support vendor engagement: Selection, technology roadmap (push for functionality)
Liaise with stakeholders: Product, IT and Engineering teams. Acts as a point of contact for technical expertise to advise senior stakeholders, internal and external.
Disseminate technology internally and externally. Actively participate in technical forums and other specialist communities.
Support global stakeholder teams with escalations, vendor technical issues, technology collaborations and discussions.

Key performance indicators (financial and non-financial)

Deliver high-level designs for standard product or bespoke features.
Deliver network architecture designs for SD-WAN and/or SSE.
Deliver contributions to the SD-WAN, packet and automation technology strategy
Build strong engagements with vendors and partners

Service Delivery (SD) - Understanding SD requirements and designing operational models
Engineering - Drive and support Design, Build and Test processes, including automated processes and CI/CD pipelines when required
TAC/NOC -Operational models for technology, specialised support
IT - Product modelling support, design change management

Role specific requirements

Skills & Experience

5+ years' experience in Network Service Providers, Network Vendors or Cloud Providers in relevant network design, SD-WAN/SDN areas.
Proven track record in one or more domains like IP network design, SD-WAN, Ethernet/IP services.
Experience in network design (IP/MPLS/Ethernet).
Experience in MP-BGP protocol
Experience in designing and deployment of SD-WAN solutions
Experience in Cloud Services or SD-Access solutions (e.g. deployment of network functions in the cloud, secure tunnelling protocols, cloud gateways, etc)
Experience in engaging with vendors and development partners (e.g. system integrators)
Experience in scripting/managing virtual network functions
Ability to design multi-domain solutions across one or more technologies
Clear understanding of software defined networking principles (SDN)
Experience in Versa or Velocloud SD-WAN solutions will be valued.
Experience in security in SD-WAN solutions or SSE will be valued.

Qualifications

MSc or higher education in Electronics, Telecommunications or Computing
Network vendor certifications will be positively valued (e.g. CCNP)
