Job description
A lathe operator is responsible for the operation and maintenance of lathe machines used in manufacturing settings. Their primary duties include setting up the lathe machine, selecting the appropriate cutting tools, and loading the raw material (often metal or wood) into the machine. They interpret blueprints, technical drawings, or work orders to understand the specifications of the required part and adjust the lathe settings accordingly.
During operation, they monitor the machine's performance, ensuring that it operates within specified parameters and makes necessary adjustments to maintain quality and precision. Lathe operators are also responsible for inspecting finished parts to ensure they meet the required specifications for dimensions, surface finish, and tolerance. Additionally, lathe operators perform routine maintenance tasks on the machine, such as cleaning, lubricating, and replacing worn parts to ensure optimal performance and prevent breakdowns. They may also troubleshoot and diagnose technical issues that arise during operation, performing minor repairs or coordinating with maintenance personnel for more complex problems.
