Introduction: Centre for Social Markets (CSM) is a non-profit organisation working to create more environmentally, socially and economically sustainable societies. It’s main areas of focus include promoting Sustainable Agriculture, Climate Action and Responsible Business practices. As a part of its programmes CSM’s Fairtrade India project has been involved in promoting sustainable and Fairtrade Certified business practices across India and has been promoting sustainability in food and fashion production and consumption. The Textiles sector is termed as one of the most polluting industries in the world contributing to high pollution, waste and excessive use of natural resources. In recent years CSM has been increasing its work in promoting Sustainable Textiles. Position Summary As a part of the core CSM team, the Senior Programme Officer will be responsible for design and execution of key programmes for promoting the understanding and adoption of sustainable environmental and social practices across the textiles value chain from ginning to garmenting, particularly among the MSMEs in South India. The work will involve undertaking gap analysis on environmental sustainability parameters with businesses in the textiles value chains. Working with business leaders to understand their areas of priority and building the business case for adoption of sustainability solutions. Building capacity and facilitating the adoption of sustainability practices. The role would also involve nurturing the eco-system through interventions like events, B2B match-making, promoting the concept and the sustainability champions that supports the adoption of sustainability practices in the textiles sector.

Specific roles and responsibilities:

a.

Programme Design, Development & Plan:

The role would involve designing, streamlining, developing, strategizing on how to promote the awareness and adoption of sustainable environmental practices and Fairtrade Certification by MSME businesses. Specifically, the role will involve: ·

Designing programmes for raising awareness among MSME businesses in the textiles value chain about sustainability practices related to Fairtrade certification and sustainable and efficient- water, energy, GHG, Hazardous Chemical use, Solid and Liquid Waste, process efficiency and sustainable raw material use in their operations. ·

Creating action plans for identifying and reaching out to MSMEs and dissemination plan for raising awareness. ·

Creating a multi-year project plan with annual and quarterly milestones and action plans for achieving the programme objectives related to adoption of sustainability practices in the textiles value chain

Programme Delivery and Implementation:

The programme would need to ensure a systematic adoption of sustainability practices especially among the MSMEs in the textiles value chains. Specifically, the role will involve: ·

Based on an agreed project plan work with team members and vendors to implement the awareness and engagement programmes. ·

Organise events, webinars, conferences, conduct meetings and other engagement activities with the stakeholders for better adoption of sustainability practices ·

Undertake gap analysis, develop implementation roadmaps, undertake training, facilitate the adoption and assist in resolving challenges related to adoption of sustainability solution and practices by businesses in the textiles value chain. ·

Facilitate linkages of- solution providers, green finance providers- with the textiles businesses across the value chain and visa-versa. ·

Undertake online and offline communications, newsletter development and dissemination and other communications activities related to the programme implementation. ·

Make presentations and conduct workshops with techno-commercial details related to the Fairtrade Cotton & Textiles standards as well as other Environmental sustainability and management practices such as management of hazardous substances, water & wastewater, emissions to air, energy consumption, waste reduction their relevance and application for the textiles sector MSMEs in India. Undertake direct follow ups with attendees of workshops, conferences and seminars. Resolve any knowledge or information gaps to help build the business case for adoption of Fairtrade Standards and sustainability practices.

c.

Developing & growing the Sustainability Solutions network for the Textiles sector : The role would involve developing and growing the network of solution providers, green finance providers, other facilitators and MSMEs in textiles industry interested in promoting the adoption of greater sustainability in the textiles sector. Specifically the role will involve: ·

Through research, networking activities and other means identify and connect with sustainability solution providers relevant for the textiles sector. ·

Through various awareness and engagement activities create a network of MSMEs in the textiles sector who may be interested in the adoption of sustainability solutions. ·

Onboard the network of MSMEs and Solution providers to the programme platform. ·

Facilitate the cross-connections between the solution providers, finance providers and textiles sector businesses. ·

Work with vendors to develop a digital platform of solution providers, finance providers and other facilitators relevant for adoption of sustainability solutions in the textiles industry. Seed the digitial platforms with content, network members. Undertake the management and maintenance of the digital platform.

d.

Multi-stakeholder engagement and partnership building : The role would also require to manage and engage with stakeholders from diverse sectors and contexts related to enabling adoption of sustainability in the textiles sector. Specifically, this will involve: ·

To achieve the programme objectives partnerships need to be fostered with civil society organisations, foundations, government agencies, private sector partners, farmer organisations and institutions. ·

The role will involve creating a multi-stakeholder platform for achieving the project objectives. Co-ordinating with stakeholders for engagement with the programme objectives across the textiles supply chains from farmer organisations to brands and retailers. ·

Connecting and building relationships with various stakeholders by understanding their priorities and seeking and developing alignment with the programme priorities. ·

Incorporating feedback from different stakeholders in the programme from the design to implementation stage. ·

The programmes would have to be rolled out and a platform for continuous engagement and involvement of the stakeholders would need to be developed so that it reaches a self-sustaining level of activity. ·

Participating in stakeholder management discussions and meeting and planning and executing joint activities with them.

Programme Monitoring & Reporting:

The role will need to monitor and manage the progress on the programme implementation as well as report periodically to the senior management, partner and donor organisations. Specifically, this will involve: ·

Update and co-create the reporting indicators and reporting framework and templates for different stakeholder information requirements. ·

Create systems for and gather relevant data points and information for programme reporting. ·

Provide monthly reports on the progress of the different aspects of the programme implementation and regularly maintain the programme log-frame. ·

Organise, participate and present in workshops, seminars with the textiles factories and mills representatives to raise awareness about Environmental Sustainability practices in the Textiles sector.

Skills and Experience required a.

7 to 10 years experience in Environmental Programme design and execution, research, policy and partnership building in the textiles value chains with regards to implementation of sustainability solutions b.

Good Knowledge/understanding of the textile supply chain and the production processes. c.

Should have had previous experience of sustainability practices with a specific focus on the environmental sustainability requirements across the textiles supply chainin Textile mills, dyeing and printing units, fabric mills, CMTs and Spinning units. d.

Should have prior experience having conducted environmental compliance trainings in and audits specific to textile supply-chains. An auditor/trainer of sustainability standards and practices. Most preferable if experience is in conducting environmental indicators audits. e.

Exhibit’s ability to multitask on a regular basis f.

Should be a confident public speaker able to present and speak at conferences, conduct seminars, training sessions. g.

Should be able to manage engagements programmes with multiple stakeholders. h.

Excellent Communication skills in at least two of the following languages English, Tamil and Hindi i.

Documentation and Reporting to be excellent j.

Experience of Training on topics mentioned above k.

Should be a Graduate in Textile or Fashion Studies/ Social Science/Environmental Science l.

Should have experience of building and managing teams. A team player and flexible to undertake any task to achieve team objective.
