Job description
Responsibilities
- Provide technical expertise to develop WSP’s engineering geology and geotechnical engineering capability within the NZ iCRC.
- Takes a lead role in the planning of projects to correctly scope out projects, with appropriate inputs, outputs, verifications and technical reviews.
- Carries out investigations, analysis and consulting services for clients on assigned projects including preparing technical/ project reports, drawings and other documents to a high standard.
- Produce and review designs, calculations, contract documentation, specifications, schedules, construction estimates and drawings suitable for the preparation of lead region’s contract documentation. In particular, to undertake shallow and deep foundation design, retaining wall analysis and design, slope stability analysis and design of stabilisation measures, liquefaction analysis and ground improvement design.
- Undertake appropriate verification of projects and provide peer check/review of team members’ work as necessary.
- Deliver a range of geotechnical projects with a focus on supporting the use digital engineering to grow this capability for the Earth sector, through the provision of professional consulting services as a Principal Geotechnical Engineer.
- Add value to wider WSP India teams across organisation boundaries through coaching, mentoring, guidance and technical advice to contribute to an enthusiastic performance-focused team culture.
Key Competencies
Mandatory Skills/Knowledge
- Good to excellent knowledge of common MS office suite applications
- Good working knowledge of numerous geological and geotechnical analysis applications, such as the GeoStudio suite, RocScience suite, SLIDE, Wallap, L Pile, Geo5, Plaxis and Cliq.
- Good working knowledge MS SharePoint & BI applications, digital tools & applications for enhanced productivity & efficient teamwork.
- Sound appreciation of technical risks are understood, managed, assigned to the organisation best placed to manage the risk, and these are well communicated with the project team, and/or client.
- Good verbal & written communication skills to interact with peers & clients with teams in lead region.
Desired Skills/Knowledge
- Geotechnical skills for a range of projects relating to property and buildings and transport and infrastructure.
- Sound engineering judgement on technical issues to solve for clients to get the best possible outcome for a project.
- Knowledge of construction and procurement practices, with the ability to seek innovative / value-engineered solutions for projects.
- Appetite to build knowledge in relevant New Zealand design codes, standards, legislation and practices.
- Understands, appreciates & proactively applies business management solutions processes & best practices.
- Applies best health & safety practices & behaviour to offer sound engineering design & construction solutions.

Communications
- Ensure project team members are aware of their responsibilities and are kept up to date with
- progress, issues and changes.
- Identify, and report to the Project Manager in a timely manner any changes to scope, risks, quality and any other concerns to ensure these can be managed in a coordinated manner.
- Communicate constructively with clients and stakeholders. Facilitate team and client meetings effectively.
- Hold regular progress meetings with project teams.
- Actively seek feedback from clients and communicate this to the team to ensure the successful delivery of projects and lessons learnt.
- Provides regular feedback to team members in a constructive and timely manner.
- Communicate the most appropriate technical solution to the client, along with why this is the best option for them. Where this differs from the client’s desired solution, clearly state the risks and/or disadvantages of this option compared with the most appropriate option so the client can make an informed decision.
