KAWERAK POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION STATUS:                           Regular, Full-Time

EXEMPT STATUS:                              Non-Exempt

PAY SCALE GRADE:                         13 – 14 – 15

REPORTS TO:                                     Staff Attorney

 

BRIEF SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The Paralegal is responsible for assisting in providing comprehensive, high quality legal services to the Tribal Legal Services staff and clients. This position works closely with the Staff Attorney, Child Welfare Attorney, Tribal Justice Development Specialist, and Domestic Violence Justice Coordinator. Our team: 1) represents Alaska Tribes in child welfare matters that implicate the Indian Child Welfare Act; and 2) provides technical assistance and training to tribal justice systems.

 

Duties may include:

  1. Preparing legal documents and correspondence.
  2. Communicate with clients, opposing counsel, courts, and community partners.
  3. Perform legal and factual research.
  4. Provide litigation support.
  5. Provide community education, independent presentations, assistance with legal clinics, and development of educational materials.
  6. Provide information as requested for grant and funder reporting.
  7. Other duties as needed and assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent work experience required. Prior education or experience related to law and/or tribal courts preferred.  Working knowledge of Alaska Native legal issues preferred.
  2. Must possess strong research skills, writing and verbal communication skills and organizational skills.
  3. Must be dependable, self-motivated and able to work with minimum supervision.
  4. Experience in cross-cultural and rural environments preferred.
  5. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Windows, and internet skills required.
  6. Must be willing to travel extensively within the Bering Straits Region.
  7. This position is a Covered Position subject to all requirements of the Alaska Barrier Crimes Act AS 47.05.310-47.05.390, 7 AAC 10.900-10.990, and to the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, 25 USC 3201-3211 (ICPA). A background check clearance is required, including fingerprints, and the employee’s name will be submitted to the Background Check Unit of the State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services and entered into their central registry.  Barrier Crimes Act and ICPA requirements apply and must be complied with at all times in order to remain in the position.
