A bitumen lab technician at an importer storage location is responsible for testing, analysing, and quality control of bitumen samples received at the storage facility. The job description may include the following duties and responsibilities:
- Sample collection and preparation: Collect representative samples of bitumen arriving at the storage location and prepare them for testing.
- Testing and analysis: Conduct various tests on the bitumen samples using specialized laboratory equipment and tools, such as viscosity tests, penetration tests, softening point tests, and ductility tests. Ensure that all tests are conducted following standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety guidelines.
- Quality control: Perform quality control checks on incoming bitumen batches to ensure compliance with required specifications and standards. Identify any quality issues or deviations and report them to the relevant authorities.
- Calibration and maintenance: Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments used for bitumen testing. Ensure that all equipment is in proper working condition and perform regular maintenance activities as needed.
- Documentation: Record and maintain accurate and detailed records of test results, samples received, and any deviations or issues observed during testing. Prepare and submit test reports to the relevant departments or clients as required.
- Safety and compliance: Follow established safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment in the laboratory. Adhere to all relevant regulations and industry standards in terms of handling, testing, and storage of bitumen samples.
- Continuous improvement: Stay updated on the latest testing methods, technologies, and industry trends related to bitumen testing. Participate in training programs, workshops, or seminars to enhance knowledge and skills.
- Communication: Collaborate and communicate with other team members, engineers, and supervisors to ensure smooth operations and efficient handling of bitumen samples. Liaise with suppliers, clients, or regulatory authorities as needed.
Requirements ü A degree or diploma in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field
ü Previous experience in a bitumen laboratory or similar testing environment preferred
ü Knowledge of bitumen testing methods, equipment, and industry standards
ü Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
ü Attention to detail and ability to work with precision
ü Basic computer skills for data entry and report generation
ü Good communication and teamwork abilities
ü Understanding of laboratory safety protocols and procedures.
