Job description
WHO WE ARE:
At FLYING WHALES, our aim is to shake up the aeronautics and transport markets. Nothing less! We are a group of passionate people who believe that status quos are made to be exceeded. To do this, we are designing a unique aircraft which minimizes ground infrastructures and reduces economic and environmental costs. Our airship, the LCA60T, will carry and transport heavy loads from point to point, loading them on hover flight. The application field for our solution covers a wide range, starting with the logging industry. Our airship, equipped with state-of-the-art engineering and advanced technologies, will propose disruptive and game-changing solutions to overcome logistics problems in land-locked areas. To develop, manufacture and sell this major aeronautic innovation, we welcome the best talents, regardless of their age. Our project is on track; if you are an open-minded and rigorous pioneer ready to innovate, if you are one of those people who believe that a cohesive and passionate group can give life to a ground-breaking project, come and rise to the challenge with us!
PROJECT INTRODUCTION:
The maintenance of exterior and interior structure, of an aircraft, is based on inspections, which can span from the simple visual to a more detailed in depth inspection using non-destructive testing technologies.
Such inspections are performed by humans, using in some cases tools which are manually operated. The large surface of the LCA60T and its wide structure requires innovative methods detection to increase precision, allow automation and reducing at the same time, detection’s errors, inspection’s time and cost.
New methods need to be assessed to build a roadmap up to the validation during the 1st airship test phase and certification to be able to substitute the current approved methods.
The project aims at tackling two topics:
The inspection of the envelope of the airship. A preliminary study has been performed to evaluate the possibility to install cameras at entrance of the LCA60T hangar to visually scan the exterior of the airship in comparison to a drone inspection. Now it is time to investigate how innovative techniques (AI, machine learning…) could be used to automatically detect envelop defect without human intervention and be certified by authorities, and how improved camera sensors such as IR could enhance the performance of inspections.
The automated close up inspection of structures. There is an interest not only for the LCA60T but also aircraft to develop automated inspection methods and tools to reduce downtime and cost of maintenance. The LCA60T has up to 70km of composite structure to be inspected. the use of an automated tool would greatly help managing the cost of maintenance. This topic could also be studied in partnership with Air France Industry for the inspection of aircraft at gate without using the drone technology but other types of robots.
CORE MISSIONS:
You will join the Operations & Maintenance Department. You will be in close relation with Design Office, Its structure team and it’s maintainability team. You will contribute to all activities linked with the LCA60T structural inspection maintenance implementation strategy, notably:
To support the development of LCA60T exterior visual inspection implementation strategy, including:
o Define the regulatory basis for the visual, detailed and special inspections including the validation requirements
o Define the type and minimum size of defects that have to be found
o Propose the camera type and installation requirements
o Investigate the current and future inspections tools and methodologies which could be useful to LACA60T program
o Investigate the possibility to use AI, macine learning, deep learning to detect the defects
o Propose the camera tool-based validation program to be included in the test campaign.
To support close up inspection means development for LCA60T and aircraft Inspection at gate in partnership with AFI:
o Benchmark of existing possible smart solution (new type of sensors, other industries such as nuclear…)
o Identify and rate according to TRL and certification strategy the most relevant technlogies.
EDUCATION AND SKILLS:
Final year of Engineering diploma in Aeronautics/Aerospace (or equivalent), with a very good level of English.
You appreciate teamwork and you are a good communicator.
You take up challenges with passion and you like to surpass expectations.
You want to contribute to a unique international industrial adventure.
