Job description

To start as soon as possible, we are looking for a Director (m/f/d; 100%) .

As the face of DGAP both internally and externally, the Director acts as Chief Executive Officer and head of the Management Board (Geschäftsführung). The Director reports to the Board (Vorstand), involves – in close cooperation with the President – the Advisory Council (Präsidium), and engages DGAP’s members through discussions held in a diverse range of fora and regional events.

The German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) is committed to fostering impactful foreign and security policy on a German and European level that promotes democracy, peace, and the rule of law. Comprised of a research institute and a membership organization, the nonpartisan institution has shaped the debate on foreign and security policy in Germany since its founding in 1955. As Germany’s leading foreign policy think tank, DGAP provides an essential platform for evidence-based debate and fosters well-grounded foreign policy decisions. It also publishes the German language magazine Internationale Politik (IP).

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Leading, integrating, and shaping a complex organization that consists of around 100 employees and 2,700 members
• Building a strategic research agenda while further developing the organization and sharpening DGAP’s distinctive profile as a think tank and membership organization in a highly competitive environment
• Taking responsibility for management and financial decisions based on impact indicators and performance measurement
• Representing DGAP and its mission externally
• Maintaining and developing relationships with representatives from government, business, academia, and the media

YOUR ABILITIES

• Strong and integrative leadership
• Excellent social and communication skills
• At least 10 to 15 years of (international) experience in relevant fields
• Profound experience in organizational development and strategy as well as research management
• Proven record of fundraising; substantial experience with public sponsors, foundations, corporate partners, and individual donors
• Extensive network across politics, business, think tanks, academia, media, and civil society in Germany and abroad
• Excellent academic credentials (e.g., PhD) in the field of international relations (broadly conceived)
