Unser Profil

The Institute of Geosciences and Geography/Teaching- and Research Area Applied Structural Geology at RWTH Aachen offers a 41-month postdoctoral position focused on synchrotron radiation-based operando 4D µCT imaging. This role is affiliated with the EXCITE² Network, supported by the European Union, comprising 19 imaging facilities across the EU. The primary objective of EXCITE² is to enable open access to these facilities across Europe and associated countries. The main effort of this postdoctoral position will go towards assisting EXCITE2 users in planning, executing, and analyzing operando 4D microtomography imaging experiments at Synchrotron light sources in Europe and the UK.

Ihr Profil

We are looking for a colleague with a completed PhD in Earth/environmental sciences, material sciences, physics, chemistry (or similar), who satisfies most of the following criteria:

Ihre Aufgaben

Determining the complexities of innovative materials and the processes affecting their performance is paramount for achieving a sustainable, carbon-neutral future. To address the significant challenges surrounding sustainable development and a circular economy, we need to ensure detailed, multi-dimensional characterization of materials across a variety of sectors. Operando 4D microtomography offers groundbreaking new insights into the microscale developments affecting rocks and other materials utilized in a variety of sectors. However, the uptake of the technique is limited by the complexities associated with experimental planning, beam time acquisition, experiment execution, and data analysis. This is where you come in – your role will be to help users do cutting-edge operando 4D microtomography imaging experiments at Synchrotrons.

You will benefit from access to some of the most advanced x-ray transparent experimental apparatus for geo- and material science experiments currently available and will have time to develop your own research next to user support. You will be joining a team of microtomography experts at RWTH Aachen, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Ghent, and TU Bergakademie Freiberg. Your work will provide you with an excellent opportunity to build a professional network both among EXCITE2 users as well as in the synchrotron imaging community.
