Job description

In the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Kassel Institute for Sustainability, - Chair of Sustainable Technology Design (Prof. Dr Lechtenböhmer), the following position is expected to be filled by 01.08.2024:

Research Assistant/Post doc (m/f/d), EG 13 TV-H, fixed-term, full-time (currently 40 hours per week)

The position is initially limited for 3 years with the possibility of extension for a further 3 years (qualification position according to § 72 HHG in conjunction with § 2 para. 1 sentence 2 WissZeitVG for habilitation).

Tasks:

• Independent scientific services in research and teaching in the field of sustainable industrial and energy system transformation
• Development of a research area in industrial and energy system transformation
• Coordination and delivery of courses in the context of model-based analysis of industrial systems, related material flows and industrial and energy system transformation.
• Collaboration in the IT modelling laboratory of the Chair of Sustainable Technology Design
• Teaching methods of energy and environmental systems analysis, such as computational modelling of socio-technical or human-environment systems and methods of scenario analysis.
• Supervision of bachelor and master theses
• (Co-)Supervision of PhD students in the field of industrial and energy systems analysis and/or industrial ecology.
• Development, acquisition and management of third-party funded research projects.

Requirements:

• A university degree with good to very good grades in systems analysis, economics or engineering, geography, industrial ecology or a comparable degree.
• And a PhD in the field of technology and/or social sciences or in a similar interdisciplinary field. The required degree must be obtained at the latest by the date of recruitment.
• Sound knowledge of quantitative scenario building and interpretation.
• Knowledge of industrial production systems, preferably in heavy industry.
• Sound knowledge of programming (e.g. Python) and database design.
• Extensive knowledge and experience in the development of quantitative models, including the research and preparation of comprehensive databases and their computational implementation.
• A thorough and independent working style.
• Strong organisational skills.

Advantageous Skills:

• Experience in scientific teaching, e.g. systems analysis.
• Experience in (content-related) guidance for programming energy and industrial system models.
• Experience in scientific/peer-reviewed writing.
• International study or work experience.
• Good knowledge of German.
• Experience in modelling energy systems.
• Knowledge of socio-technical production systems for basic materials such as steel, chemicals or cement.
