Job description
The Global Trade Law Office (GTLO) is part of the legal department (SD 71) and acts as a centre of excellence. It supports all divisions of the DHL Group, including Corporate Functions, GBS and Service Lines in all matters relating to export controls, sanctions and customs. The GTLO monitors the uniform and consistent implementation of the associated Group guidelines and standards. It is available to the divisions as a point of contact (escalation point) for solving regulatory problems and compliance issues.
Senior Legal Counsel Export Control (m/f/x)

Essential Tasks:
- Main responsibility for all legal issues in the area of export control and sanctions in connection with the Middle East and Africa (MEA) regions as well as European export control and sanctions issues
- Monitoring of regulatory developments relevant to the target region in the area of export controls and sanctions at regional level and from an international perspective
- Assessment of legal risks in international business operations and development of strategies to minimise risks
- Independent negotiation and communication with internal and external stakeholders
- Review and advise on local regulatory requirements that could potentially impact DHL Group's business practices, with the assistance of the Legal Department or external advisors as appropriate
- Support in the (further) development of the Group's strategy and policy setting in the area of export control and sanctions, taking into account current/future risks, regulatory developments and business plans
- Development and alignment of standards, guidelines and templates for compliance with Group policy and to minimise risks
- Support and coordination of cross-group projects relating to the implementation and improvement of trade compliance processes
- Development, implementation and monitoring of Group-wide training programmes for employees
- Responsibility for DGF in relation to trade compliance-related support and supervision
- Advice on the implementation and monitoring of compliance with the Group policy
- Advise and support the legal department in the review and negotiation of contracts related to international business activities to ensure that all legal requirements and contractual standards of the Group or divisions are met
- Advice on the introduction of compliance programmes, control systems, compliance metrics and tools to ensure and improve compliance with Group policies and standards
- Independent review of divisional risk and self-assessments as part of Group-wide monitoring
- External representation of DHL Group in compliance matters, e.g. vis-à-vis authorities, courts, associations, companies
- Management and commissioning of external law firms
Specialist requirements:
- Preferably at least 4 years’ regulatory and/or proven expertise in one or more organizations, a recognized government enforcement or licensing agency or similar authority
- Qualified lawyer (m/f/d) in law desirable, ideally specialising in foreign trade law or compliance
- Solid experience in managing (international) issues, projects, and implementing and ensuring compliance guidelines in international trade, knowledge in the area of customs or criminal law desirable
- Experience in managing external service providers and law firms
- Very good written English skills, fluent in German desirable
