University Hospital Tübingen

The Faculty of Medicine is one of the four founding faculties of the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen. With its non-clinical facilities as well as its research and teaching area corresponding to the organisational units of the University Hospital, it is one of the largest medical training and research institutions in Baden-Württemberg.

We are looking for a

PhD candidate (f/m/x)

part-time (65%) and limited to 3 years.

Our research group ( is at the University Hospital Tübingen in the Department of Diabetology, Endocrinology, and Nephrology . We are affiliated with the M3 (Malignome, Metabolome, Microbiome) Research Institute, the Institute of Diabetes Research and Metabolic Diseases (IDM), and the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD).

We are studying the dynamic interactions between tissue resident immune cells, stromal cells, and microbes in metabolically relevant tissues that interface with the environment. We use an interdisciplinary approach combining the fields of immunology, diabetology, and microbiology to increase the understanding of tissue-immune crosstalk and factors that dictate metabolic health and disease, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). By integrating the abundant clinical resources of the University Hospital Tübingen, we aim to understand tissue immune cells in their local environment (niche), defined by specialized stromal cell subsets. For this, we pair advanced single-cell based techniques such as flow cytometric analysis and sorting with molecular techniques, including single-cell RNA sequencing and 3D volumetric imaging, allowing us to visualize and quantify complex immune and stromal cell topography in the context of metabolic diseases.

Your tasks

The applicant will study the functional contributions of type 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) and the type 2 immune module in liver tissue niches in both murine models of NASH and advanced hepatic fibrosis and will determine how activated ILC2s feed-back to regulate the perivascular niche and define their crosstalk with other lymphocytes and liver resident stromal, ductular, and parenchymal cells in obesity-related liver disease. The applicant will use preclinical mouse models as well as patient material/patient cohorts.

Your profile

We offer remuneration in accordance with TV-L (collective wage agreement for the Public Service of the German Federal States), severely handicapped persons with equal qualifications are given preferential consideration. Interview expenses are not covered. Please note the applicable vaccination regulations. Personnel appointments will be made pursuant to the fundamental stipulations of the legal statutes for universities in Germany.
