JOB OPENING
- Title: Environmental Health Technician
- Location: Landstuhl, Germany
- Start Date: Immediately
- Job-Type: Part-Time On-Call (PTOC) = Substitute and replacement personnel for planned and unplanned absences at the PHCE office. Personnel should be available on short notice.
SUMMARY
You shall assist PHCE (Public Health Command Europe) with USAG drinking water surveillance programs. Responsible for collecting drinking water samples, determining resource requirements, preparing sample kits for missions, performing field instrument measurements, and conducting site work on U.S. Government installations per existing PHCE policies and procedures. You shall document all field information and take photographs, when necessary, at the field site.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License, USAREUR driver’s license, US Army Transportation Motorpool (TMP) driver’s license, and International/EU Identity Card allowing travel within the EU for the entire term of service
- Graduate of an Environmental Science Specialist/Technician Course from a postsecondary vocational/trade school or an Associate's or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in Environmental Technology or Engineering. Exceptions are authorized by the Director, EHS or Chief, Environmental Health Engineering, PHCE through a review of a bona fide occupational qualification (BFOQ) and/or through the Regional Health Contracting Office- Europe
- Minimum of one year experience in water sampling
- Skilled in the English language verbal and written communication in order to successfully present and document technical information obtained during sampling activities as well as communicate with customers and supervisors
- Knowledge of environmental concepts principles and practices in the areas of drinking water quality; groundwater and surface water.
- Knowledge, ability, and skill in the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including, but not limited to, hearing protection, eye protection, protective gloves, and respirators, in laboratory and field environments
- Ability to read maps and navigate to US installations in the PHCE area of responsibility
- Ability to operate field equipment including but not limited to Spectrophotometer, colorimeter, GPS, pH/conductivity meter
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds of equipment; to push/pull equipment carts; walk on uneven terrain, stand for long periods, and to kneel, stand, bend, and reach during field missions
- Skilled in drinking water sample collection techniques
JOB DESCRIPTION
- Conduct quality control (QC) and calibration activities on portable water quality analytical equipment prior to use in a field environment. Reports all issues with equipment when discovered
- Communicate with PHCE staff (i.e., engineers, scientists, technicians) as necessary to provide information on-field activities and any findings from field activities or work in the office. Also provides assistance to parallel staff as needed
- Operate government electronic equipment, computers, and computing systems
- Shall operate a government vehicle such as a car/pickup truck/step van. You are also responsible to provide at least the minimum level of insurance as required for contract employees authorized to drive a Government Vehicle car/pick truck/step van.
- Under minimal or no supervision while accompanied y another environmental health technician, military or civilian Government employee, travel to US installations to collect water quality samples, operate field equipment, document equipment parameters, and collect photographs of fieldwork.
- Assists in preparing water sample kits. Approximately 60% of work is in an office or laboratory setting. The remaining 40% of the work required for this position is in a field setting which may require temporary away from the Landstuhl, Germany area
Duties include:
- Collection of drinking water quality samples
- QC and calibration of portable water quality equipment
- Document and submit field activity reports and photo documentation
- Working in a laboratory setting to assist in preparing sample kits
- Entering documentation related to drinking water quality sampling into the Government computing system
- Entering documentation related to drinking water quality sampling into the Government computing system
- Operate field equipment including but not limited to Spectrophotometer, colorimeter, GPS, ph/conductivity meter
