Are you interested in renewable energies and want to drive forward the energy transition in the shipping industry? Then you've come to the right place!  

The DLR Institute of Maritime Energy Systems (MS) researches and develops innovative solutions for defossilisation and emission reduction in shipping. In co-operation with industry, these solutions are put into practice. To this end, the institute is setting up a large-scale infrastructure to test and trial the newly developed energy systems in a standardised laboratory environment and under real conditions. The institute will be divided into six scientific departments. In the Ship Reliability Department, the focus is on the development of design methods for the integration and evaluation of the reliability of new energy systems in ships.

As part of the WeldScanPro joint project, an automated process is being developed that is to be used for the inline inspection and analysis of the fatigue life of welded joints in order to reduce manufacturing and maintenance costs. Your tasks include:

• You identify open research topics and formulate hypotheses
• You develop software tools, e.g. in Python, for
  • Carrying out weld seam tests using a universally applicable measuring system
  • Evaluation of the fatigue strength of welded joints using machine learning methods
• You are responsible for carrying out fatigue strength tests on weld seams
• You validate and verify the models and software tools developed
• You are responsible for developing scientific methods to evaluate the results and categorise them within the scientific community
• You present the research results at conferences and write scientific papers
• You plan and monitor the budget plans that are transferred to you
• You will be responsible for taking on subtasks in the area of third-party funding acquisition for the acquisition of national and European third-party funding
• You have the opportunity to contribute to the strategic development of the research area
• You have the option of an accompanying doctorate

• completed scientific university degree (diploma/master's degree) in engineering in mechanical engineering, materials science, shipbuilding, mechatronics or other degree programmes relevant to the job (computer science, mathematics, physics, etc.)
• knowledge of machine learning methods or statistics as well as programming skills, preferably in Python
• extensive English and German language skills
