At the Remote Sensing Technology Institute, innovative procedures for atmospheric correction of optical remote sensing data are realised and operated. The aim is to derive the reflectance or emissivity and temperature of the individual objects (e.g. soils, vegetation, buildings, water) on the Earth's surface. The influence of the atmosphere on the space- or airborne images must be regarded as very complex, since the scattering of water vapour, aerosols and atmospheric molecules often varies locally and must usually be derived precisely from the data. DLR's development and operation of the PACO (Python-based Atmospheric COrrection) software makes it one of the world's leading players in the field, and the PACO software is used in a large number of national and international projects. For example, for the hyperspectral spaceborne mission EnMAP. But it is also planned to use it for future missions. The Remote Sensing Technology Institute is also responsible for the calibration of EnMAP.
The holder of the position will be responsible for the following tasks:
- new developments within the processing system PACO (Python-based Atmospheric COrrection) for atmospheric correction of optical remote sensing data from different sensors within a team (e.g. analysis, design, implementation, verification and validation)
- complex integration and maintenance of PACO for projects and missions, e.g. EnMAP, Sentinel-2, HySpex, as well as other existing and future missions.
- further development and validation of innovative scientific and at the same time operationally applicable methods for atmospheric correction for the generation of reflectance or emissivity and temperature maps (e.g. masking, consideration of the bidirectional reflectance distribution function and of products of other systems, as well as time series); these are particularly critical research tasks.
- detailed documentation based on ECSS (European Cooperation for Space Standardisation) and scientific publication of the results in high-ranking ISI-Scopus journals and presentations at relevant national and international conferences.
- operation of the high-precision spectral and radiometric calibration of EnMAP within a team; this requires extensive knowledge of physics in the field of optics
- transfer of the results to optical remote sensing data from different sensors
- university degree (diploma or master) in the field of computer science, (atmospheric) physics, geography or other courses of study relevant for the job
- many years of knowledge in method and algorithm development in the field of optical remote sensing of the Earth's surface
- at least several years of experience and knowledge in one of the following areas:
- atmospheric correction of optical satellite image data
- spectral and radiometric properties of spaceborne optical remote sensing data
- solving complex scientific problems in optical remote sensing of the Earth's surface
- many years of knowledge in programming with Python
- very good knowledge of the use of Python IDEs (e.g. PyCharm, Visual Studio), version management (e.g. GitLab, GitHub) and the Linux OS
- very good knowledge of English
