The Centre for Organismal Studies Heidelberg (COS Heidelberg) is a central scientific institution of Heidelberg University with 23 research groups representing the entire breadth of the life sciences in research and teaching. The following position (full time, limited to initially 3 years) is now available in the research group of Prof. Lauren Saunders.

Would you like to work on cutting-edge genomics research at a premier developmental biology institute? The Saunders lab is looking for a motivated molecular biologist to help set up the new lab and to promote a welcoming, positive atmosphere. Our group uses and develops cutting-edge single-cell genomics techniques to achieve whole-organism phenotyping in zebrafish. We aim to understand how individual cell types contribute to morphological innovation in vertebrate animals, with a particular focus on neural crest and mesodermal lineages. We employ a variety of mutagenesis, protein-tagging and other genome editing approaches to study how individual cell types respond to changes during development as well as over evolutionary time scales. The position will focus on wet-lab applications, but an aspiration to learn basic programming is highly desirable. Lab technician / Lab manager in developmental genetics (f/m/d)
100%, 39,50 hrs/week

Tasks:

• Performing single cell combinatorial indexing (e.g. sci-RNA-seq, sci-ATAC-seq) experiments (no previous experience required)
• Molecular biology work (including RNA/DNA/protein extraction, PCR, electrophoresis, cloning)
• Tissue dissociations and sample preparation from zebrafish for single cell RNA-seq
• Programming and operation of automated liquid handling devices
• Using CRISPR/Cas-systems for mutagenesis and engineering of zebrafish
• Contribution to general laboratory organization, such as: instrument maintenance, lab calendar, ordering, inventory, maintaining stocks and training students. Note that this task will be shared with another technician in the group
• Onboarding and training of new group members or visitors in technologies and protocols used in the laboratory

Essential skills required:

• Bachelor’s degree from accredited university or technical school or multiple years of experience in molecular biology or a related discipline
• Very good practical experience and theoretical knowledge of cell and molecular biology methods
• Basic molecular and biochemical lab skills (PCR, qPCR, basic microscopy)
• Strong attention to detail and problem-solving capabilities
• Independent work ethic and desire to learn new methods and protocols
• A willingness to learn basic computer programming
• Work well with people from various cultures
• Ability to speak and write fluently in English, which is the working language of the laboratory
• Basic software skills (word-processing, Excel, Powerpoint/keynote, cloud storage)

You might also have:

• Experience in standard genomics techniques (RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, DNA-seq) and library preparation
• Background working with fish or other aquatic organisms
• Experience with high resolution imaging cells or organisms
• Experience in single cell genomics protocols
• Programming skills (R, Unix, Python, cluster computing)

The position comes with a salary up to E9b TV-L. In principle, the position can be filled in part-time.
