Job description
W2 professorship for “Arabic Studies with a focus on the History of Knowledge / Arabistik mit Schwerpunkt Wissensgeschichte” (m/f/d)
at the Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies as of October 1, 2024.
We welcome applications from outstanding scholars who engage with the whole spectrum of Arabic Studies in their research and teaching. One significant focus of their work should be the field of the History of Knowledge, covering several of the following areas:
- Arabic philology
- classical Arabic literature
- Arabic-Islamic philosophy
- the History of Knowledge from a trans-cultural perspective
Experience in the acquisition and implementation of third-party funded research projects is required. In addition, the following qualifications are desired:
- expertise in the field of literary theory and methods
- expertise in the field of Graeco-Arabic Studies
- willingness and ability to design courses in cooperation with colleagues from the field of Iranian Studies
- experience in the field of Digital Humanities
The prerequisites for employment are a positively evaluated junior professorship, a
habilitation or equivalent academic achievements, as well as proof of pedagogic aptitude for academic teaching and the willingness to participate in academic self-administration.
We also expect a high level of commitment in teaching, including the development of new teaching collaborations outside the institute, as well as the willingness to design and carry out interdisciplinary collaborative research. The applicant is to contribute to the curricula of the B.A. and M.A. degree programs “Arabic and Islamic Studies,” the interdisciplinary master’s degree program “Medieval and Renaissance Studies,” and the supervision of Ph.D. students.
We particularly invite applications from international candidates. German language skills are not a prerequisite. However, the successful candidate is expected to acquire sufficient language skills to perform teaching and administrative duties in German within three years of appointment.
