Job description

Saarland University is a campus-based university with a strong international focus and a research-oriented profile. Numerous research institutes on campus and the systematic promotion of collaborative projects make Saarland University an ideal environment for innovation and technology transfer. Its pronounced international orientation is reflected, among other things, in an above-average proportion of international students. Saarland University has been certified as a family-friendly university since 2004.

Hosting a Collaborative Research Centre, a Käte Hamburger Centre, a DFG-funded Research Unit and several Research Training Groups, the Faculty of Humanities at Saarland University is a research-intensive faculty specializing in the fields 'Europe', 'Language and Cognition' and 'Cultural Diversity'. The faculty is currently establishing another specialist area focusing on digital methods in the humanities that will help to develop and advance research work in the humanities through the use of computational techniques and technologies and through collaborative interaction with computer scientists.

The Faculty of Humanities at Saarland University is inviting applications for the following position to commence on 1 October 2024:

W2 Professorship (with tenure track to W3) in Digital Methods and Their Application in the Humanities
(m/f/x; Reference no.: W2429)

The position is a fixed-term public sector appointment (‘Beamtenverhältnis auf Zeit’) for a maximum pre-tenure period of six years. If the appointee demonstrates outstanding performance in both teaching and research, the position will be upgraded to a permanent professorship at the W3 salary grade.

The Faculty of Humanities is looking to recruit a highly motivated individual with an established international reputation and active research programme in the digital humanities. Applicants must demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of statistics, data science and machine learning and must have a research background in one of the academic disciplines within the Faculty of Humanities. We expect the successful candidate to actively collaborate with colleagues in the other departments in the faculty and to work with them to develop interdisciplinary research projects. The professorship is a central element within the proposed Centre for Digital Humanities, which is currently in its planning phase. The person appointed to this position will have primary responsibility for the new BA-level subsidiary subject Digital Humanities, which will be offered for the first time in the winter semester of 2024/2025. This will later be supplemented by a BA-level main subject, with postgraduate level content possibly being introduced at some future time. The faculty expects the successful candidate to play an active role in preparing proposals for collaborative research projects.

The appointments will be made in accordance with the general provisions of German public sector employment law. Candidates must have experience in and an aptitude for academic teaching. They will have a PhD or doctorate in an appropriate subject and will have demonstrated a particular capacity for independent academic research, typically by having obtained an advanced, post-doctoral research degree (Habilitation), by having been appointed to a junior professorship or by having obtained an equivalent qualification. Candidates will already have experience in securing external research funding and will, ideally, already be involved in collaborative research partnerships that demonstrate their interest in and commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and research. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute innovative teaching concepts at all academic levels (Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes). They should also be willing to teach in English, to provide dedicated supervision to students working on their final-year thesis projects and to support and foster junior researchers. Suitable candidates will have native-speaker proficiency in English or German and must be willing to acquire in a reasonable period of time sufficient language skills to be able to teach in both languages.

At Saarland University, we view internationalization as a process spanning all aspects of university life. We therefore expect members of our professorial staff to engage in activities that promote and foster further internationalization. Special support will be provided for projects that maintain collaborative interactions within existing international cooperative networks, e.g. projects with partners in the European University Alliance Transform4Europe () or the University of the Greater Region ().

In accordance with the objectives of its gender equality plan, Saarland University is actively seeking to increase the proportion of women in this field. Qualified women candidates are therefore strongly encouraged to apply. Preferential consideration will be given to applications from disabled candidates of equal eligibility. Furthermore, we welcome applications from all qualified candidates irrespective of nationality, ethnic heritage or social background, religious beliefs, personal beliefs or values, age, sexual orientation or identity.
