at the earliest possible date.

At HZI, Germany’s largest research institution for infectious diseases, researchers address the global challenges caused by infectious diseases within a focused translational research programme. At MHH, research on infection and immunity constitutes one of four strategic pillars. As part of their long-standing strategic partnership, HZI and MHH established internationally visible joint research institutes such as the Centre for Experimental and Clinical Infection Research (TWINCORE) and the Centre for Individualised Infection Medicine (CiiM).

The Department of Epidemiology at HZI covers research on the causes, distribution, spread and control of infectious diseases on population level. It is dedicated to play important roles in the development of preventive measures, early detection systems and tailored and evidence-based non-pharmaceutical interventions for infectious diseases in populations at the local, regional, national and international level.

Special emphasis is placed on large population-based cohort studies, e.g. the NAKO health study or adaptive population cohorts like the MuSPAD cohort ( , ). The Department of Epidemiology is also leading national modelling consortia (e.g. ), it is well integrated into the national network of modelling consortia MONID ( ) and coordinates the translational infrastructure (TI) “Bioresources, Biodata and Digital Health” within the German Centre for Infection Research (DZIF). The department is responsible for the Research Focus Digital and Global Health at HZI and is involved in international consortia related to infection epidemiology and One Health surveillance. To train the next generation of scientists, the department also coordinates the PhD Programme Epidemiology at MHH.

The candidate should have the ability to employ state-of-the-art methods of infectious disease epidemiology, including artificial intelligence, evidence synthesis and population studies.

Essential qualifications for the applicant: Key responsibilities of the department head: Prerequisites for the appointment: Commitment is expected especially in the public health master programmes of the MHH, the PhD programs of the Hannover Biomedical Research School as well as the model programme in Medicine „HannibaL“. An integration into the excellence cluster “RESIST – Resolving Infection Susceptibility” is also expected from the successful candidate.
