Cooperative Radio Navigation for the Moon – FPGA Development
Mt Etna space-analogue mission
Starting date
1. March 2024
Duration of contract
3-4 months
Remuneration
up to German TVöD 5
Type of employment
Full-time
With their Heracles and Artemis programs, both ESA and NASA are planning space missions to the Moon, including the establishment of a lunar base. Key components for such missions are communications and navigation: It is critical to know the positions of all entities on the lunar surface, whether they are payload boxes with scientific instruments, autonomous robots, or astronauts, and to be able to communicate scientific data, control commands, etc. Both can be provided by local radio communications. A special design of the physical layer allows to measure distances and directions, from which the positions and orientations of the robots etc. are estimated by a localization algorithm.
At DLR, we have implemented a cooperative radio navigation system and demonstrated its capabilities. A recent demonstration took place on Mt. Etna, Sicily, as part of a Moon-analogue mission. The system is currently implemented as a software-defined radio (SDR). In order to increase the bandwidth, energy efficiency and technology readiness level (TRL) of the system, the next step is to transfer core signal processing blocks from the CPU to an FPGA.
The goal of this internship is to develop the necessary FPGA functionality. The first step will be to set up and become familiar with an FPGA development, simulation and test environment. Then, signal processing blocks for wireless communication will be implemented, tested and integrated. Finally, interfaces to existing software modules will be developed.
Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives.
