The DLR Institute of Maritime Energy Systems researches and develops innovative solutions for the defossilisation and emission reduction in shipping. In co-operation with industry, these solutions are put into practice. To this end, the institute is setting up a large-scale infrastructure to test and trial the newly developed energy systems in a standardised laboratory environment and under real conditions. The institute will be divided into six scientific departments. In the Ship Reliability department, the focus is on the development of design methods for the integration and evaluation of the reliability of new energy systems in ships.

As part of an R&D project, the increase in the service life of additively manufactured components is to be investigated using hybrid manufacturing processes. The project primarily aims to accelerate the prediction of the residual stress state of components manufactured using the WAAM (wire-arc-additive-manufacturing) process and to evaluate the fatigue strength of various manufacturing strategies.

Your responsibilities include:

• You identify open research topics and formulate hypotheses
• You will develop a process to increase fatigue strength
• You will be responsible for developing simulation models to determine the optimal printing strategy and the properties of additively manufactured components
• You will further develop the prediction models of the residual stress state of components manufactured using WAAM
  • You will carry out residual stress measurements and measurements of temperature curves during WAAM production
  • You digitise additively manufactured components using laser sensors and 3D profilometers
  • You will also develop algorithms to automate the digitisation processes
  • You will carry out tests to characterise the material properties of hybrid WAAM components
• You will analyse various solutions to the research questions, creating a novel analysis, development and validation environment
• You will be responsible for developing scientific methods for evaluating the results and categorising the results in scientific terms
• You document all information for the realisation of the research results
• You present the research results at conferences and write scientific papers
• You will plan and monitor the assigned budget plans
• You will be responsible for taking on subtasks in the area of third-party funding acquisition for the acquisition of national and European third-party funding
• You will have the opportunity to strategically develop the research area
• You will have the opportunity to complete an accompanying doctorate

• completed scientific university degree (diploma/master's degree) in engineering in the fields of shipbuilding, marine technology, mechanical engineering or other degree programmes relevant to the position
• initial professional experience in numerical welding process simulations, the fatigue strength assessment of additively manufactured components or welded joints, or the digitalisation of components
• knowledge of fatigue strength methods, finite element methods and material characterisation tests
• extensive English and German language skills
